This is a good book, but each chapter has been put on twice, 1, 1, 2, 2, etc. This is annoying

Historia
The Little Stranger follows the strange adventures of Dr. Faraday, the son of a maid who has built a life of quiet respectability as a country doctor. One dusty postwar summer in his home of rural Warwickshire, he is called to a patient at Hundreds Hall. Home to the Ayres family for more than two centuries, the Georgian house, once grand and handsome, is now in decline - its masonry crumbling, its gardens choked with weeds, the clock in its stable yard permanently fixed at 20 to nine.

An Excellent, Scary, Thought-Provoking Thriller
Revisado: 07-06-09
This is a great book. People who say it "isn't much" and who didn't like the ending were I'm afraid not too perceptive.
Perhaps they didn't notice that the narrator was unreliable, or didn't perceive the theme of class in the UK, they just thought it was a ghost story where the ghost isn't identified finally.
I loved it! Get it! great narration too from Simon Vance, as usual.

Historia
With the insight, humor, and compassion we have come to expect from her, Maeve Binchy tells a story of family, friends, patients, and staff who are part of a heart clinic in a community caught between the old and the new Ireland. Dr. Clara Casey has been offered the thankless job of establishing the underfunded clinic and agrees to take it on for a year. She has plenty on her plate already - two difficult adult daughters and the unwanted attentions of her ex-husband - but she assembles a wonderfully diverse staff devoted to helping their demanding, often difficult patients.

Terrible narration choices were made!!
Revisado: 06-17-09
this should have been an easy and charming book to listen to. Sile Bermingham, however, ruined it for me.
First of all, puzzlingly, she reads in an American accent for all the Irish characters.
Much worse than that is her "Polish" accent which is so stilted, incorrect and just UGLY that I found it impossible to listen to. Also a pair of twins show up that talk exactly like robots! Why???
I turned it off after a few hours. I couldn't keep on having my ears assaulted. it's too bad...

Get this book now. It's pure pleasure from beginning to end, with one of the best narrators I've ever heard. Engaging, suspenseful and full of humor and tenderness, "The Small House at Allington" is GREAT.

this is amusing for a little while, but not for long. it's disturbingly sexist and the unlikeable characters aren't worth following..
