Just. Could. Not. Listen to more than 2 chapters. Narrators make or break books…. This book is broken by a robotic, uninflected, monotone narration… lovely voice, but no emotion, no attempt to differentiate between characters. Mind numbing to the point I could not continue.

So rare to find a book that is unique and well written and well narrated… Thank you!

I ask for very little from my Audio books: Be well written, and be well narrated. That's all. It's shocking how infrequently those two simple things come together.... SHOCKING. So I'm just going to shout this next bit: THANK YOU SHIRTALOON AND HEATH MILLER! Knocked it out of the park you wonderful humans -- thoroughly and completely enjoyed every moment and cannot wait for the next installment.

I forgot that i barely made it through the last books . . . the writing style is just so weird, and the narrator doesn't seem to understand where to place emphasis within a sentence. It comes off as having been badly translated from a foreign language and then read by someone equally confused by normal english inflection. Perhaps this is self published, but it needs a really good editing and a new narrator IMHO.
Do yourself a favor and listen to anything written by: Orson Scott Card, Michael G Manning, Shirtaloon, Melissa McPhail, OR narrated by Nick Podehl or Timoty Reynolds.

Ugggg . . . thought this was THE Stephen King, one of my favorite authors . . . but no, it is not. I'm actually writing this review before finishing the book because I couldn't continue listening. It's not well written, and it's not well read. it's just . . . meh.

I'm actually stunned at the reviews for this book. The Narrator Roberto Scarlato was impossible to listen to . . . his narration has a robotic, monotonal cadence that I found impossible to endure. If any life exists in the Authors writing, it was killed by the narrator. I even tried twice to get far enough in to be engaged by the story. Both times I was forced to stop by the ache in my jaw from gritting my teeth in an effort to get past the reading. I'm sure Roberto is a nice guy, but for me -- he's got no talent for the job of narration. Maybe he gets better as he goes along? Maybe Laura Jennings can save the book? I'll never know . . . Nick Podehl, perhaps you've ruined me with your masterful narration . . . sigh....

Smart, insightful, beautifully narrated and a very fine sequel indeed! I don't know if I can stand to wait for the third installment Mr. Hodges. I selfishly wish you masses of creativity and long sleepless nights of feverish writing!

Would you try another book from Cheryl Matthynssens and/or Zachary Michael?

That's a giant MAYBE, but with some conditions: ONLY if Cheryl stops hiring these ridiculously bad narrators! Her books are being RUINED by bad narration! Cheryl, darling, dearest -- did you not read my last review of book three?? THAT Narrator (Jimmie Moreland) was terrible, and instead of listening to my pleadings, you hired Zachary, who clearly went to the same school as Jimmie Moreland! Apparently at this school, they BEAT you when you correctly place emphasis within a sentence, or when you properly pronounce words. Zachary is so bad, I haven't even finished the book yet and I'm writing this. Cheryl, you're a GOOD writer! But its literally impossible to see that through the mangled narration...Wait . . . maybe you don't have a say in who narrates your books?! Perhaps you really pissed off the guy who picks the narrator . . . If that's true . . . I forgive you... Otherwise...

If you’ve listened to books by Cheryl Matthynssens before, how does this one compare?

Honestly, i'm so distracted by the bad narration that I'm not able to give an honest answer about that...

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Oh lord . . .I blew my wad on step three. Just for fun let's talk about how excruciatingly bad Zacharay's attempts at doing a female voice are. Horrible is my kindest offering. Let's take it one step further and discuss his attempts at doing a SEXY female voice.... It's this bad: I'm now GAY.

Was Pseudo-Dragon worth the listening time?

Aaaaaghhhhhh!!!! I so want to say yes to show a kindness to Cheryl . .. .but .....god! I think I would rather have drunk a cup of dirt. It would have been less painful, and more satisfying than listening to what might have been some good writing destroyed by droning word butchers.

Any additional comments?

I have so many, but I'll just pick one. I've decided to become a Narrator, because CLEARLY ... anyone can do it.

What did you like best about Bloodmines? What did you like least?

I'm enjoying the series by Cheryl Matthynssens-- the first book was very enjoyable, this second book is probably also good, but the narrator makes it almost impossible to appreciate.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Hiring a different narrator . . . my dog for instance.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Oh boy . . . where do I start. I'm sure Jimmie Moreland is a nice guy, and he actually does accents pretty well, but he has absolutely RUINED this book for me. His incorrect use of emphasis within a sentence, and the overly slow, stuttering, robotic reading is excruciating. I'm listening to the book on 1.25 speed just to be able to finish it. Seriously, did anyone LISTEN to this guy before giving him the job?! I can tell you this -- I'm going to avoid any book with his name attached as narrator . . .Again, probably the nicest guy in the world, but dude, take some vocal lessons or something.

Was Bloodmines worth the listening time?

The book itself was . . .but, and I repeat myself, it was ruined by the narrator for me.

Any additional comments?

It would only be fair to say that the narrator of the first book wasn't great, but I wasn't moved to write a review about it in the middle of listening to it as I have with this one. . .To the Author, and Authors everywhere: I'm begging you to be extremely picky about WHO narrates your precious material -- I don't know what the process is for choosing someone, and perhaps there's a shortage of good readers, but the best book in the world is made into crap when read by a bad narrator . . .
