Historia
When Jack and Elizabeth meet as college students in the gritty '90s Chicago art scene, the two quickly join forces and hold on tight, each eager to claim a place in the thriving underground scene with an appreciative kindred spirit. Fast-forward twenty years to suburban married life, and alongside the challenges of parenting, they encounter the often-baffling pursuits of health and happiness from polyamorous would-be suitors to home-renovation hysteria.

That is the highest compliment. A little dystopic, a little nostalgic, a lot of commentary on our modern life. I loved it.

Historia
Not long ago, Naomi Klein had just such an experience—she was confronted with a doppelganger whose views she found abhorrent but whose name and public persona were similar enough to her own that many people confused her for the other. For a vertiginous moment, she lost her bearings. And then she got interested, in a reality that seems to be warping and doubling like a digital hall of mirrors. It’s happening in our politics as New Age wellness entrepreneurs turned anti-vaxxers find common cause with fire-breathing far right propagandists (all in the name of protecting “the children”).

Excellent exploration of our current political environment
Revisado: 03-20-24
I didn’t agree with every word, but this book does an excellent job of explaining how we ended up in this era of hyper-partisanship and what those of us on the left can borrow from MAGA conservatives to win both the battle and the war. Using Wolf as the stand-in for the average radicalized individual was so, so smart. Every progressive and leftist (and even liberal, even though that’s become a bit of a dirty word on the left, including in this book), should read this book, and heed its advice.

Historia
For centuries, works of art have been stolen in countless ways from all over the world, but no one has been quite as successful at it as the master thief Stéphane Breitwieser. Carrying out more than two hundred heists over nearly eight years—in museums and cathedrals all over Europe—Breitwieser, along with his girlfriend who worked as his lookout, stole more than three hundred objects, until it all fell apart in spectacular fashion.

Not for me
Revisado: 02-11-24
Well written and well-researched but I found this book to be a bit dull. Maybe people who appreciate fine art would love it. My low rating is not a reflection on the book itself, it simply wasn’t to my taste.

In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

Beautiful story, beautifully told
Revisado: 12-20-23
This book took my breath away. The story was beautiful and heartbreaking without ever being saccharine or predictable. The burden of talent and loneliness of art; the beauty of connections that are so deep, you understand each other in your bones. This is also the one of the few explicitly post-pandemic books I’ve read that isn’t cynical or sneering. I really loved it.

Historia
Even through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

This book won a Pulitzer Prize so it’s obviously good but I was surprised by how much I liked it. At its core, a book about capitalism and patriarchy, the less you know about this book in advance, the better. Let it surprise you.

Historia
In Deep Hole, one of the world’s foremost crime novelists crafts a sweet, poignant romance novella that could only come from his perfectly calibrated sense of time and place. It incorporates fights and misunderstandings and rejection, and is set against the backdrop of a quiet surfing town in Rhode Island where everyone knows each other’s business—and pleasure.

It's 1985, and at Oxford University, Pimm's, punting, and ball gowns are de rigeur. Ursula Flowerbutton, a studious country girl, arrives for her first term anticipating nothing more sinister than days spent poring over history books in gilded libraries - and, if she's lucky, an invitation to a ball. Historia
To his customers and neighbors on 125th street, Ray Carney is an upstanding salesman of reasonably priced furniture, making a decent life for himself and his family. He and his wife Elizabeth are expecting their second child, and if her parents on Striver's Row don't approve of him or their cramped apartment across from the subway tracks, it's still home. Few people know he descends from a line of uptown hoods and crooks, and that his façade of normalcy has more than a few cracks in it. Cracks that are getting bigger all the time.

Historia
Summer is coming to a close on the East End of Long Island, and Alex is no longer welcome. A misstep at a dinner party, and the older man she’s been staying with dismisses her with a ride to the train station and a ticket back to the city. With few resources and a waterlogged phone, but gifted with an ability to navigate the desires of others, Alex stays on Long Island and drifts like a ghost through the hedged lanes, gated driveways, and sun-blasted dunes of a rarefied world that is, at first, closed to her.

Certainly interesting, maybe enjoyable
Revisado: 08-26-23
The plot of this book felt really original and I loved how the author brought us along to learn a little more about the main character, bit by bit but I don’t think anyone can say they enjoyed spending eight and a half hours with these people. This book feels like an emotional cousin to Yellowface, in that all of the characters seem amoral, performative and unlikable. It feels like a response to our post-pandemic era and that we’re entering a cynical time for literature, with stories full of hustlers and scammers.
Whether or not a book like this is enjoyable seems separate from whether it’s, strictly speaking, good. It was well written and the performance was amazing but I certainly wouldn’t recommend it for everyone in the way I did for a book like True Biz or Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow. It almost feels like Audible needs to add a feature to review that let’s the reader know what types of books the reviewer typically rated as 5-star. That would do more to help me understand if a book was worth a listen for me personally than reviews from people who perhaps don’t like a book because they don’t like a character who was clearly written to be unlikable.

Historia
Amanda and Clay head out to a remote corner of Long Island expecting a vacation: a quiet reprieve from life in New York City, quality time with their teenage son and daughter, and a taste of the good life in the luxurious home they’ve rented for the week. But a late-night knock on the door breaks the spell. Ruth and G. H. are an older couple—it’s their house, and they’ve arrived in a panic. They bring the news that a sudden blackout has swept the city. But in this rural area—with the TV and internet now down, and no cell phone service—it’s hard to know what to believe.

LOVED this book but see why it’s not for everyone
Revisado: 06-10-23
I listened to this book on a recommendation knowing nothing about it and I LOVED it. It caught me totally off guard, which is so rare. I was a little surprised by the number of 1 and 2-star reviews and I think it’s because those readers a quiet book about the apocalypse. If you need something “to happen” this book is not for you. But if you’re comfortable with ambiguity and are interested in stories that explore the human condition, I cannot recommend this book enough. The writing is beautiful and the calm, measured narration is almost unnerving.
