Trite and poorly written
Revisado: 02-10-23
Part of the deluge of fiction written poorly that tries to make up for a lack of creativity by shoving in every woke trope possible. I only made it as far as I did because I fell asleep.

Historia
The year is 1970. Emma Gable, a blind teenager coming of age in a small industrial town in Western New York, is about as far from the seismic cultural transformations rocking campuses and city streets across America as a person can get. Emma escapes the chaos of her dysfunctional family by dialing up random numbers on the phone in her bedroom, just to see who'll answer.

can just for once we NOT…
Revisado: 08-22-21
Overall seemed interesting and then… of course… because of no real reason at all other than we try and shove a gay moment in EVERYTHING now, I find myself in a gay love story. I am done with this not very awesome in the first place production. Just for once, people, resist the urge to slip in your propaganda. If it isn’t necessary to the plot, why try and force fit it in?!?! Real amateur job.

Historia
Late Victorian London. When James Miller, the most respectable of Scottish businessmen, is pulled, dead, from the Thames, his daughter is drawn into an investigation which reveals a whole world of secrets and corruption. Alongside local detective Culley, Catriona’s search for her father’s killer leads all the way to the tragic truth behind the ghostly legend of The Darkwater Bride and the power of her deadly kiss. The Darkwater Bride combines the genres of the Victorian mystery thriller with the equally classic Victorian mode of the ghostly tale.

Can we just tell a good story?!
Revisado: 03-01-21
I bailed after an extended ridiculous segment that went on and on about how the female lead character would not follow social conventions prevalent when the story was set and she thought it ridiculous she could not participate in the investigation, or go into a men’s only club, or on and on and on...and my goodness it was so stupid and distracting and unnecessary that I quite lost interest in what had started out as a good premise. Two thoughts: 1) If you have tell people you are powerful and awesome, you aren’t; and 2) Lazy contrived interactions like that unwittingly blame those that were excluded in the past by implying they had only to bulldoze ahead and brush off the silly gatekeepers... That is really not how that worked.

Historia
It's not safe for anyone alone in the woods. There are predators that come out at night: critters and coyotes, snakes and wolves. But the woman in the red jacket has no choice. Not since the Crisis came, decimated the population, and sent those who survived fleeing into quarantine camps that serve as breeding grounds for death, destruction, and disease. She is just a woman trying not to get killed in a world that doesn't look anything like the one she grew up in, the one that was perfectly sane and normal and boring until three months ago.

Subtle as a sledge hammer on cement
Revisado: 10-29-20
The story itself isn't bad, but the author frequently trips over it in her zeal to be appropriately woke and diverse with all the subtlety of a sledge hammer on cement. In fact, an imaginary friend in the form of a floating gigantic talking fish might have only been slightly less convincing than the insistent references to the race, disability, and sex of the main character. Hey, did I mention I am a biracial, black female with a prosthetic leg? 'Cause, well, I am a biracial, black female with a prosthetic leg that hates guns and as a biracial, black female with a prosthetic leg... I just wanted to say, well, first that I hate guns, although it is the apocalypse... I don’t even remotely find guns useful... because I am a biracial, black female with a prosthetic leg and not one of those racist rednecks that likes guns and hates biracial, black females with prosthetic legs. Secondly, I... well, I can’t remember what I was saying so let me adjust my prosthetic leg for a moment, because I have a prosthetic leg like all biracial, black females with a prosthetic leg do... Oh yeah, secondly, I hate guns.
My goodness... Does the author actually think people walk around thinking "I am black" all the time as a qualifier to every thought or interaction? "I am black, so I am going to eat a taco." "Since I am black, I am going to drink a glass of water." "As a black man, I am going to do ten push-ups, which somewhere across town a racist doesn’t think I can do because I am black." It was actually so pervasive it became enjoyable like the cheesy horror movies on Elvira’s Movie Macabre. At times I could almost hear Joe Bob Briggs from Monster Vision: "In this next scene we have Two Exploded Bodies Fu, Four Armed Militia Fu, and 13 references to a prosthetic leg!" Also *drumroll* the character is a bisexual, which is so overwhelmingly important to the plot that she waits until three quarters of the way into the book to casually mention it to a couple of kids and then the subject promptly never comes up again. I laughed so hard that the tears obscured my vision and I almost drove off the road.
Overall this was enjoyable, but not entirely for the reasons the author likely thought it would be.

Not very good
Revisado: 01-30-19
Like a lot of these free audible selections, the premise was initially interesting but pretty quickly broke down. There were a lot of vapid, silly thoughts presented by a holy man character as if they were profound, which were only slightly less annoying than the obvious points anyone has figured out by the 6th grade being presented as a gem of a life lesson. The whole thing started to feel like a conversation with a model that had just come back from a yoga retreat... I couldn’t finish this.

A sexually charged and wickedly funny thriller starring Tony Award-winning actor Billy Crudup, Harry Clarke is the story of a shy Midwestern man leading an outrageous double life as the titular cocky Londoner. Moving to New York City and presenting himself as an Englishman, he charms his way into a wealthy family's life as the seductive and precocious Harry, whose increasingly risky and dangerous behavior threatens to undo more than his persona.

interesting premise, but sinks fast
Revisado: 01-30-19
The premise seemed interesting, “guy from Indiana who speaks with a British accent because that is who he is inside”...but an hour and a half in there were already three gay scenes... I quit while I was ahead. I suggest this be labeled as a gay story to make it easier to find by people that actually want to read that. I don’t...most people don’t...

Historia
Pioneers of Britain's nascent rock and metal scene back in the late 1970s, Iron Maiden smashed its way to the top, thanks in no small part to the high-octane performances, operatic singing style, and stage presence of its second but twice-longest-serving lead singer, Bruce Dickinson. As Iron Maiden's front man - first from 1981 to 1993 and then from 1999 to the present - Dickinson has been, and remains, a man of legend.

Story of a polymath extraordinaire
Revisado: 01-05-18
I have been a fan of Iron Maiden and Bruce Dickinson since I was 13, and as the years have passed I have constantly been impressed with how both the band and the singer have kept relevant. This story could have easily gone down the path of many "band memoirs" and simply been a regurgitation of conquests, an exercise in ego stroking, and a way to spread gossip about old enemies. Except, 'kin 'el, this is Bruce D! He has been too busy actually living a full, rich, multi-layered life to have time to be petty!
Not only was this book interesting, but it was also inspirational and showed how satisfying it can be to constantly challenge oneself intellectually and physically. He discusses stupid behavior and missteps, but doesn't really dwell on it any longer than he does his triumphs. He has a lot of thoughts, a lot of experiences, and a lot to say. His openness about his emotions during time spent in Bosnia, flying back troops from Iraq, and dealing with cancer treatment are tender and transparent in a way that is thought provoking and helpful ... salacious details that would simply broadcast his machismo are left out. He is a private, thoughtful person sharing his story, not an attention hound validating his relevance.
This is one of the better autobiographies I have read recently. He also has an excellent reading voice, which made this especially enjoyable! Felt like I was commuting home with a childhood idol!

"Marley was dead to begin with...." These chillingly familiar words begin the classic Christmas tale of remorse and redemption in A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Now R. William Bennett rewinds the story and focuses the spotlight on Scrooge’s miserly business partner, Jacob T. Marley, who was allowed to return as a ghost to warn Scrooge away from his ill-fated path. Why was Marley allowed to return? And why hadn’t he been given the same chance as Ebenezer Scrooge? Or had he?

Revisado: 01-05-18
The author does an excellent and believable job building out the story of Jacob Marley. I was a little skeptical when I read the description, but this came together very well. I also think the character's story of personal growth and redemption was inspiring. Very well done!
