Beautiful and unforgettable
Revisado: 12-02-24
This book is almost 16 hours long, and still I wasn't ready for it to end. Such a fascinating, intricate plot populated by compelling characters. Liane Moriarty manages to weave so many individuals' stories into one beautiful tapestry. I'll be looking for more from this author.
Happily, the narration by Caroline Lee and Geraldine Hakewill did justice to the story. Highly recommend!

Historia
Anna Williams-Bonner has taken care of business. That is to say, she’s taken care of her husband, bestselling novelist Jacob Finch Bonner, and laid to rest those anonymous accusations of plagiarism that so tormented him. Now she is living the contented life of a literary widow, enjoying her husband’s royalty checks in perpetuity, but for the second time in her life, a work of fiction intercedes, and this time it’s her own debut novel, The Afterword. After all, how hard can it really be to write a universally lauded bestseller?

I kept listening because of the narrator
Revisado: 10-14-24
I consider any book narrated by Julia Whelan, one of the best voices out there, and she never lets me down. I enjoyed the first book in this series, but this book was just too similar, and I tired of spending so much time on a deeply unlikable protagonist. I hope the author moves on to more interesting characters worthy of her talent as a writer.

Imaginative and sweet, but not my cuppa
Revisado: 10-08-24
I am a fan of Matt Haig, and I hate to be the poop in the punchbowl (to quote Coach Beard), but the story devolved into a tedious series of woo-woo events about 1/2 of the way in. I was loving it until then. So not quite my thing, but it's creative and earnestly hopeful, and the writing and narration are strong.

Wonderful book, terrible narration by the author
Revisado: 09-15-24
I read this book years ago and loved it. But I wish authors would resist the temptation to narrate their own books. Voiceover work is best left to the professionals.
Her Southern accent is out of place in a story that takes place in New England and includes mostly male characters. Sometimes she switches voices, sometimes she doesn't--there's no reason to it. The California-raised male protagonist sounds like Holly Hunter. The character of Bunny sounds cartoonish. The rest just blend together.
By all means, read the book, but give the Audible version a pass.

Historia
It took three car crashes to kill Jake. Theron David Alden is there for the first two: the summer they meet in rural New Hampshire, when he’s fifteen and anxious, and Jake’s seventeen and a natural; then six years later in New York City, those too-short, ecstatic, painful nights that change both their lives forever—the end of the dream and the longing for the dream and the dream itself, all at once. Theron is not there for the third crash.

A tender, intimate portrait, skillfully narrated
Revisado: 07-14-24
In Theron David Alden, August Thomson gives us a sensitive, introspective protagonist who’s navigating the journey from adolescence to young manhood—and his confusing, formative relationship with the slightly older Jake. Anyone’s Ghost has been described as a “queer coming of age novel,” but its themes of identity, friendship, and first love are universal and relatable, even for this 60-something cisgender female reader.
Thompson’s writing delivers one dopamine hit after another: the nuanced observations that had me nodding in recognition, the fresh turns of phrase. Halfway through this listen, I bought a hard copy so I could go back and study Thompson's craft. I look forward to reading the novel, but I’m glad I listened to it first: Lee Osorio’s narration creates a vivid, immersive experience that does justice to Thompson’s prose.
My question now is: Who will direct the film? I see Timothée Chalamet in the lead role.

From the upper crust herself, Helen's unconventional--if happy--marriage has made the girls' social position precarious. As daughters Jemima and Alice navigate the rise and fall of their family--each is forced to re-examine who she is, and even who she is meant to love.

Boring and inane
Revisado: 06-07-24
11 hours and 17 minutes of hand-wringing and silly, ponderous dialogue. Overwrought narration. I stuck it out for three hours and then started skipping far ahead before I finally gave up in irritation. Don't waste your time.

Where's the plot?
Revisado: 04-12-24
A dull and dreary imagining of the lives of mostly unlikable women mooning after men who lead much more interesting lives. I kept waiting for something to happen and finally gave up.

Skillful plotting, excellent narration
Revisado: 04-03-24
Most so-called thrillers are predictable, but this one kept me guessing. The author laid out the plot skillfully and logically, so although it was as twisty as other reviews promised, it never felt contrived. The characters were well-drawn and believable. I'll be looking for more from this author.
I also appreciated that narration enhanced the story and never detracted from it
