Historia
The Joker is dead, but not forgotten. Gotham City is saved, but it is still not safe. By night, its new symbol of hope, Batman, continues his fight to protect the innocent and the powerless. By day, his alter ego, Bruce Wayne, wonders whether there may someday be a future beyond skulking the city’s rooftops or the cavernous halls of his stately manor alongside the ever-dutiful Alfred Pennyworth. But even after death, the Clown Prince of Crime’s imprint can be seen in more than just the pavement.

As a fan of really just the Burton Batman films... this didn't satisfy.
Revisado: 04-23-25
As stated, I am not into comics or really even superhero shows/films; but, I like Batman because of the realism. The Burton movies captured this aspect the best IMO. So, I was pretty excited to see that someone was writing a book using the universe that Burton had created. But, I don't think it lived up to that standard.
First, it's not a bad book. It's okay. The story isnt going to blow you away, the villains won't blow you away, and the performance won't blow you away. Everything is just sort of "eh, okay"...from start to finish.
The real problem I have is while they definitely used the characters from the Burton universe, they didn't really tell a "dark" "gritty" "real" story. What you have here (IMO) is a story more suited to a Batman cartoon. Nothing in the way these characters act or speak (dialogue) gives you a sense of "we are back in 1990 & Batman is dealing with unordinary circumstances in a very reality based way".
(spoilers of villains in first paragraph underneath)
I dont like crapping on vocal performances for these audio books, but the performance was also just sort of "baseline". Michael Keaton isn't a hard performance to mimic. He's the only Batman to not put on a deep fake bravado voice when he's wearing the mask...I guess he decided to hide his voice after the joker, but, by the time he runs into the penguin he's decided it's unnecessary? The Knox character is too cartoony, and the joker is just straight up nothing like JN's performance. Definitely the toughest ask, but when the easier assignments weren't satisfactory then I've got to list the complaint. And, while we have no basis for Hugo...I found his accent slightly annoying. This isn't a complaint, just a personal gripe of the choice.
All together I found everything to be very bland. I very rarely start to listen to other books before finishing the one I'm in the middle of. That happened here.
I was very close to giving 2 stars. The only reason I didn't was because I am not normally into these types of stories. But, I love Batman & Batman Returns so I also don't know who you're trying to please if not someone like me.
I would not recommend this book to someone who only likes the Burton Batmans. But, if you just like Batman in general maybe you might find it interesting.

Most of the books I read are memoirs of musicians & this is my one of the best.
Revisado: 02-19-25
I was around 10 years old when Jessica Simpson started appearing on MTV & TRL, and a couple years later she would be doing newlyweds. While I'm not a huge pop music fan, it was just on in those days if you turned to MTV.
As a boy growing up everyone had their favorite crush. Most liked Britney, some Christina or JLO, I was very much a Jessica guy when I first saw "I think I'm in love". So I always rooted for her (even though I wasn't necessarily buying her albums) as I saw her move into different musical directions & acting.
I say all that to say I wasn't some mega-fan of Jessica, but I definitely had some interest in her book. I finally got around to it & all I can say is it's a very raw & moving book. She's lived a very blessed life, but everyone has struggle & tragedy. There were multiple parts (especially with her cousin) that moved me to tears. If you have any interest at all in her career or life, I can't recommend this book enough.

One of the most successful music acts of all time, Dire Straits filled stadiums around the world. Their albums sold hundreds of millions of copies and their music - classics like “Sultans of Swing”, “Romeo and Juliet", “Money for Nothing”, and “Brothers in Arms” - is still played on every continent today. There was, quite simply, no bigger band on the planet throughout the '80s. In this powerful and entertaining memoir, founding member John Illsley gives the inside track on the most successful rock band of their time.

I am a huge dire straits fan. there's not a lot out there about their history. This will scratch that itch. Obviously, Mark is the "guy", but John was there the entire way. And, you get a good glimpse into some me of Mark through johns story.

If you like the movie you'll like the book
Revisado: 11-25-24
I was a huge fan of the movie as it came out when I was a teenager playing varsity sports for a team that a experiencedna lot of success. I had always heard the movie twisted some stuff to make it a more condensed & Hollywood tale. That's true, but they kept it pretty close. But, I would recommend the book to those who like the movie. Its still got meat on the bone.
The thing I was worried about (and did happen IMO) was race bait & a political angle. I have no problem telling it like it is . In 1989 There will be more acceptable nastiness than in 99 & so on & so on. So while I do think race was harped on a little too much, it was a real part of the story.
Now, the obvious political bend from the author is 100% installed & took me out of a part of the book. I would actually argue that in 2024 he criticized the right opinion. But, that's not the issue. I just don't think the chapter that dove into politics was needed.
But, I recommend the book to anyone.

When Norm Macdonald, one of the greatest stand-up comics of all time, was approached to write a celebrity memoir, he flatly refused, calling the genre “one step below instruction manuals.” Norm then promptly took a two-year hiatus from stand-up comedy to live on a farm in northern Canada. When he emerged he had under his arm a manuscript, a genre-smashing book about comedy, tragedy, love, loss, war, and redemption. When asked if this was the celebrity memoir, Norm replied, “Call it anything you damn like.”

Pretty entertaining if you're a Norm fan
Revisado: 01-23-24
I could see some people who just know Norm from being on SNL (and having relationships with Sandler, Spade, and others) not being big fans of this book. But, it's authentically a Norm style memoir that blends fact/fiction along with his special dry humor. The only criticism I would have is the ending...but that's also on brand when it comes to Norm. He's all about the set-up. RIP

Big Blues Fan but not necessarily a huge buddy fan
Revisado: 01-17-21
obviously I respect buddy guy and enjoy some of his music but I wouldn't consider myself a huge buddy fan. but as one of the pillars of the genre I saw this book on the free list and figured I'd give it a shot....and it was really good. I was afraid buddy might leave out some of the old stories when he was coming up with muddy and wolf but if he is holding back then you can't really tell. maybe there's a couple examples of stories where you feel like there could be more but if you're into blues history then this book is a must-listen.

As lead singer and songwriter for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Anthony Kiedis has lived life on the razor's edge. Much has been written about him, but until now we've only had his songs as clues to his experience from the inside. In Scar Tissue, Kiedis proves himself to be as compelling a memoirist as he is a lyricist, giving us a searingly honest account of the life from which his music has evolved.

Great book for fans and non fans of rhcp
Revisado: 01-04-21
I am an rhcp fan via john frusciante. I've heard since this book came out about all the crazy stories but I never really cared to hear them. But after a decade plus of waiting around for a John book I looked to see which of these (this and fleas book) contained more john. Fleas book ends when the chili peppers are forming so scar tissue won by default. If you're like me and interested more in john or any of the other band mates (excluding Josh obviously) then I think this will meet your expectations. Anthony is very honest in this tell-all and although I heard john was angry with him about some of the stories it's about what you would expect if you knew some of his story.

Revisado: 01-04-21
First and foremost I've been a fan of SRV since I can remember. I would guess I was about 6 or 7 when my dad was playing his vhs recording of Austin city limits and I was mesmerized. I didn't know it for a few more years but the blues was in my blood. I say that to say this...whether you're a fan of the blues or guitar..hell even if you don't like music I think you'll enjoy this book. Texas Flood is about destiny. Told by the people who knew him best you get all the little details. Stevie wasn't perfect off the stage but he couldn't be topped on it. Luckily he got a chance to overcome his demons before the tragic ending which will leave you in tears. I'd be stunned to hear anyone didn't like this book if they gave it a real listen.

Known for his network of conservative websites that draws millions of readers everyday, Andrew Breitbart has one main goal: to make sure the "liberally biased" major news outlets in this country cover all aspects of a story fairly. Breitbart is convinced that too many national stories are slanted by the news media in an unfair way. In Righteous Indignation, Breitbart talks about the key issues that Americans face, how he has aligned himself with the Tea Party, and how one needs to deal with the liberal news world head on.

Very good
Revisado: 10-24-20
I got into politics pretty young. I was in high school when Gutfeld created red eye. And I found it when I was watching the scrolling guide after a late night partying. "what's a show called red eye on fox news at 3am?" I asked myself. well, it was one of the best political shows ever created. I say that because without breitbart there is no Gutfeld. I also used to watch bill maher before the 16 election melted his brain. And I remember quite a few times AB made a stink there. That's why I wanted this book. Why you should is because AB was a visionary who foresaw what the new news media would become. How to play the game, and the rules conservativs have to play by. If you wanna see how the sausage was made when it comes to alternative media and the infancy of why we would eventually get a trump presidency then you need to hear this. If only AB could be here now.
