This is a great series- some books stronger than others but all are good. The characters develop well over the series. Onward to #7! : ))))

Very YA story and I’m not a YA. That said, well written and very well performed. I did have concerns re theme of killing as the primary objective in life. When “what happens next after villain” is dismissed as “leave that for others to address” this book was disappointing. I hope “what happens next” is addressed later in trilogy.

I started this book, wondered if I should stop (Jr. High bullying is hard to listen to), kept going, got hooked, followed the meandering turns of the story, and LOVED it by the end. Who was the gun-boy? Was there even a gun-boy? What is with the roach? Are there portals? For the love of Zig, don't give up on this book!

I very seldom listen to books read by the author (writing skills are not the same as narration skills) AND I very seldom listen to books read by women (voices too high pitched and hard to hear over road noise). HOWEVER this book is the exception. Author is a great writer and reader!

Her story rings true as I am familiar with hobby farmers, with sheep, with alpaca, with poop everywhere. I am a spinner and knitter who annually camps out on a small farm; I've purchased fleece on site, milked goats, and listened to the alpacas hummmmmm. This is a wonderful book about life in a small, supportive, and rural community in Northern NZ.

As with the author's Arkady Renko series, the story started slowly. I actually sped the narration up, changing narration to 1.25 speed. I was starting to doubt listening to the story when I got hooked. Richard Ferrone, the narrator, was perfect for this story; he also narrated the Sam Acquillo mystery series. Youngman and Acquillo are comparably reluctant and flawed heros so his voice really works.

Full disclosure: Not having any TV service I didn't know this was also a TV series. Audiobook was free- well you get what you pay for. This book is a more violent take on Christie's Ten Little Indians. There were huge holes in the plot line, which made the violence even more repugnant. I deleted the next book in the series: Murder on Mystery Island prior to listening. Narrator was good; sorry he didn't have a better book to narrate.

My first book by this author. Terrific! Sam Spade goes to Mars and lives in Dodge City: a wonderful send-up of 3 genres AND a great story. The author has a wonderful imagination; the narrator is fabulous and switches accents flawlessly. Hard to pull it off but author and narrator together did it. Highly recommended.

Any additional comments?

1950s gestalt fits the bill for this ~YA-genre story. WWII meets SciFi. Good reader. One technical hitch: production editor needed to put in a small pause in narration to signify one chapter ending and next chapter beginning. Enjoyable, particularly in learning about destroyer boat architecture and military protocol, but not enough that I will be pursuing the rest of the series.
