Historia
Esteemed Egyptologist Barbara Mertz updates her widely praised social history of the people of ancient Egypt, which was originally published in 1968. Combining impeccable scholarship with a delightfully personal style, the author reconstructs the life of the Egyptians from birth to death, and beyond death, too.

Entertaining and insightful
Revisado: 02-01-24
Richly detailed and at times humorous, this comprehensive overview brings the world of the ancient Egyptian to life. Covers all the basics in an educated but very digestible manner. Narrator was perfect.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

A Tale Written By and For the Basic White Male.
Revisado: 03-23-23
Narration is great, story is fine…
But leaned real heavy into the cliche of the blonde-haired, blue-eyed, “prince” saving the day.
The Princess character, beyond being blonde/blue-eyed, further embodies the stereotypical fantasy by being malnutrition-level thin and unable to speak or do anything to save her kingdom until the jock/bully-turned-prince comes around.
The female heros in general are depicted as weaker than their male counterparts.
Stephen takes every opportunity to call women “b!tch” and “c&nt” throughout the book, causally by the male characters, even and especially the “good” guys.
Finally, this book did not need to be 21 hours. Much time was spent on re-hashing plot points and redundant details.
Would recommend if you need to fill some hours. Story was entertaining enough.

Historia
Comtesse Valtesse de la Bigne was painted by Édouard Manet and inspired Émile Zola, who immortalized her in his scandalous novel Nana. Her rumored affairs with Napoleon III and the future King Edward VII kept gossip columns full. But her glamorous existence hid a dark secret: She was no comtesse. She was born into abject poverty, raised on a squalid backstreet among the dregs of Parisian society. Yet she transformed herself into an enchantress.

PR mastermind before her time
Revisado: 03-23-22
No joke I have listened to this biography 3 times. The Comtess was truly a visionary in personal branding and PR who knew how to cultivate her reputation and leave the public always wanting more, even up to and beyond her death. Plus her central role in the 1880’s Parisian art scene and use of political connections are pretty remarkable, especially considering her humble origins.
100% recommend this audiobook to anyone interested in self-made women, art history, cultural revolution, etc
It’s an easy listen, performance is lovely.

Wonderful interweaving of cultural history and the supernatural. Love that it is narrated by the author as well.
