Historia
A long time ago, when the earth was flat, beautiful, indifferent Gods lived in the airy Upperearth realm above, curious passionate demons lived in the exotic Underearth realm below, and mortals were relegated to the middle. Uhlume, Lord of Death, second of the Lords of Darkness, King of Shadow and Pallor, makes an unusual bargain, which sets in motion an intricate sequence of events that entangle men and gods, queens and kings, sorcerers and witches, and lowly wanderers.

Supremely imaginative.
Revisado: 02-08-25
Tanith Lee’s novel has the qualities of mythology. Every detail is full of significance and charm. Every character has their own interweaving story and each tale is epic and intimate at the same time. This one will stand up to many readings.

Historia
From the outside, Harold is an average seven-year-old third grader growing up in the 1960s. Bored by school. Crushing on a girl. Likes movies and baseball—especially the hometown Boston Red Sox. Enjoys spending time with his grandfather. But inside Harold’s mind, things are a lot more complex and unusual. His thoughts come to him as birds flying through a small rectangle in the middle of his brain. He visits an outdoor cafe on the moon and is invited aboard a spaceship by famed astronomer Carl Sagan.

Now my favorite book of all time.
Revisado: 11-24-24
Surreal, sweet, sinister tale told through the mind of a child sitting in class. The plot takes a second to summarize, but if I were to write down where this book takes you, it would be longer than the book itself. Amazing, unique, imitable and hilarious.

Historia
To have been alive during the last 60 years is to have lived with the music of Paul Simon. The boy from Queens scored his first hit record in 1957, just months after Elvis Presley ignited the rock era. As the songwriting half of Simon & Garfunkel, his work helped define the youth movement of the '60s. On his own in the '70s, Simon made radio-dominating hits. He kicked off the '80s by reuniting with Garfunkel to perform for half a million New Yorkers in Central Park. Five years later Simon's album Graceland sold millions. And it doesn't stop there.

A seemingly very balanced take on Paul Simon
Revisado: 01-16-24
I love biographies, but of course they are not without their flaws. Most writers seem afraid to be critical of their subject, and a lot of the facts are cherry picked. This is clearly more of an issue with autobiographies, and I was pleased to discover this biography was not endorsed or supported by Simon’s camp. This biography (especially when the author includes his own encounter with Simon) came across as very balanced. It is undeniable that Simon possesses extraordinary, nearly other worldly levels of talent, but he is also prickly, and at times so arrogant, it’s off putting. That’s ok by me. I prefer a more realistic feeling story, especially when it’s about someone’s life. A great deal of time and care was put into detailing Simon’s childhood, which included a lot of negative, damaging experiences. It is clear where his resentment, bitterness and deep insecurities come from, and while it doesn’t excuse his unsavory behaviors, it does explain them. Many of us are a product of being raised by parents who may be well intentioned but unequipped, especially when it comes to emotional intelligence. It was just not really a priority for the earlier generations, and it really emotionally stunted a lot of people. It’s crazy how even a life of incredible achievement, fame, money, recognition cannot undo the damage of our childhood.

Dull, dull, dull
Revisado: 12-14-19
This is the first novel in The Witcher series, but it is not the first book. There are two short story collections that come first. I wish I had known that because this novel is an awful way to start. Endless dull exposition that goes no where. What a disappointment.

Intense, visceral, excellent read
Revisado: 03-09-18
Listened to this over the course of 3 nights, and we had a hard time pausing it to go to sleep! So good. It was riveting, suspenseful and terrifying, and yes, the ending was surprising, yet fitting. It was the detailed, gut churning descriptions that really made it - I could feel the filth and was convinced my clothes were picking up the scent of decay and rot with each line. Overall, such a satisfying story for this horror junkie.

Historia
Of all the universe's forces, the most mysterious, confounding, and humbling is the power of love. Alma Katsu's acclaimed trilogy - a supernatural epic that began with The Taker and sparked a chase around the world in The Reckoning - comes to a stunning conclusion, and brings Lanore McIlvrae to a final encounter with Adair, her powerful nemesis. Dismayed by Adair's otherworldly powers and afraid of his passionate temper, Lanore has run from him across time, even imprisoning him behind a wall for two centuries to save Jonathan, her eternal love.
