Heart tugging read.

The author does a wonderful job developing the characters in setting. Telling not only the story of the war as it came to England’s shores and how it affected the people, but also the love that healed two children and one woman.

And Larkin does a wonderful job reading Swallowdale. The plot and suspense have good depth oh if we could all have adventures like these children.

Historia
Janner, Tink, and Leeli Igiby, the Lost Jewels of Anniera, are hiding from Gnag the Nameless in the Green Hollows, one of the few places in the land of Aerwiar not overrun by the Fangs of Dang. But there's a big problem. Janner's little brother - heir to the throne of Anniera - has grown a tail. And gray fur. Not to mention two pointed ears and long, dangerous fangs. To the suspicious folk of the Green Hollows, he looks like a monster. But Janner knows better. His brother isn't as scary as he looks. He's perfectly harmless. Isn't he?

Historia
Twelve-year-old Dory Byrne lives with her brothers on New York City's Lower East Side, waiting impatiently through the darkest hours of World War II for her pop to come home from fighting Hitler. Legally speaking, Dory's brother, Fish, isn't old enough to be in charge of Dory and her younger brother, Pike, but the neighborhood knows the score and, like Pop always says, "the neighborhood will give you what you need." There's the lady from the bakery, who saves them leftover crullers. The kind landlord who checks in on them.

This book set a good story that just kept getting better. A story of three children; each maturing because of the hardship of war , the bonds that develop, and the neighborhood that quietly watches over them.

Historia
Jack Zulu and the Waylander's Key is an enchanting adventure in the tradition of Tolkien and Lewis, as well as Spielberg and Lucas. But this fantastical journey launches in rural West Virginia in the '80s, with a half-Appalachian, half-African kid trying to escape the town he sees defining his small, sad life. Jack discovers a gate hiding a city between 12 realms and finds out where he truly belongs in a surprising, satisfying adventure.

Captivating story
Revisado: 03-03-23
This is a captivating story to the very end. Lots of foreshadowing keeps you wondering. Lots of fun little pokes to the culture of 1984. Also deals well with a boy’s emotions with this serious illness of his mother, and still dealing with the loss of his father.

Kindness and humility
Revisado: 09-04-22
I appreciated Anne Hancock’s reading of Aunt Crete’s Emancipation. Grace Livingston Hill has done a skillful job of weaving in several angles of kindness and the freeing of a tender spirit from stifling perceptions, criticism, and bullying. We also see how our perceptions are sometimes misapplied when a pearl is in rags or a wench manipulating. Well worth the listen and taking to heart our own shortcomings to pass on kindness.
