Vapid and Aimless
Revisado: 01-25-25
This is an interminable narration of a privileged life that contributed sum zero to anything admirable. If you came here to read much about Princess Margaret, you will get very little about her yet suffer tedious detail about the author.

Historia
The Tudor period conjures up images of queens and noblewomen in elaborate court dress, of palace intrigue and dramatic politics. But if you were a woman, it was also a time when death during childbirth was rife, when marriage was usually a legal contract, not a matter for love, and the education you could hope to receive was minimal at best. Yet the Tudor century was also dominated by powerful and dynamic women in a way that no era had been before.

Historia
Like most gentiles in Nazi-occupied Paris, architect Lucien Bernard has little empathy for the Jews. So when a wealthy industrialist offers him a large sum of money to devise secret hiding places for Jews, Lucien struggles with the choice of risking his life for a cause he doesn't really believe in. Ultimately he can't resist the challenge and begins designing expertly concealed hiding spaces - behind a painting, within a column, or inside a drainpipe - detecting possibilities invisible to the average eye. But when one of his clever hiding spaces fails and the immense suffering of Jews becomes incredibly personal, he can no longer deny reality.

The courage and ingenuity of the people who tried to stay ahead of the Nazis is an amazing tribute to those aspects of integrity that we seem to forget. More of this and less of narcissism is in order today

Historia
Frederick Law Olmsted is arguably the most important historical figure that the average American knows the least about. Best remembered for his landscape architecture, from New York's Central Park to Boston's Emerald Necklace to Stanford University's campus, Olmsted was also an influential journalist, early voice for the environment, and abolitionist credited with helping dissuade England from joining the South in the Civil War. This momentous career was shadowed by a tragic personal life, also fully portrayed here.

Historia
In 1784, Thomas Jefferson was a broken man. Reeling from the loss of his wife and stung from a political scandal during the Revolutionary war, he needed to remake himself. Wandering through Europe, Jefferson saw and learned as much as he could, ultimately bringing his knowledge home to a young America. There, he would rise to power and shape a nation. More than two hundred years later, Derek Baxter, a devotee of American history, stumbles on an obscure travel guide written by Jefferson—Hints for Americans Traveling Through Europe—as he's going through his own personal crisis.

The grass isn't greener on the other side: Heiresses have always been viewed with eyes of envy. They were the ones for whom the cornucopia had been upended, showering them with unimaginable wealth and opportunity. However, through intimate historical biographies, Women of Means shows us that oftentimes the weaving sisters saved their most heart-wrenching tapestries for the destinies of wealthy women. Women of Means is bound to be a non-fiction best seller, full of the best biographies of all time.

Soap Opera Snark
Revisado: 10-18-21
Every rung of society has its challenges and misfortunes but this collection of stories is pointedly gloating over the misfortunes of the wealthy. Making is worse is the snarky narration that seemingly drips with envy at telling the tales. My goodness, it's painful all around.

Terrific account of a man who, by all examples, is what we’d like to see in athletes and celebrities through the ages. Blessed in success and gritty in challenge, the reader will cheer for him and admire him. Well done narration, as usual, by Grover Gardner. Even as a non- golfer, there are enjoyable accounts of matches that served to educate and entertain.

The information about culture and the socio- economic conditions in the mountains was interesting and enlightening. Interweaving politics was apparently an irresistible siren that detracted from the intended mission. The recording has annoying blank skips throughout. Once again, the author should stick to writing, not narration.

Completely Enjoyable
Revisado: 06-13-21
Well presented history of the family and how determination, cohesiveness and class combined with the talent of the founder and sons created an iconic style and business. However, the story shows that without engaging following generations in the work ethic part of the empire, succeeding generations view it as an asset, not an organic project that requires effort along with the enjoyment of it. Great read, start to finish.
