I listened to this book at work and so I was not 100% attentive all the time and for the most part didn’t answer the questions given at the end of each chapter. With that being said, I still found this book very helpful. I have been looking for a way to tap into my emotions and examine them and find direction and healing. This book has helped me take steps towards doing that. It put words to feelings I’ve had no words for. It gave me clear direction as to what to do with these emotions and how to find healing. It’s not a step by step, but an encouraging to explore the inner self. It’s effective at doing that. I would like to delve deeper in a future reading. I feel good after reading this, but I know that if I don’t immerse myself in the truths, and practice the hard steps of taking action, it will just become another good book that I forget about and I’ll forget how it has helped me. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for emotional clarity and direction to find healing.

I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to see where the church stood in regards to slavery, segregation, civil rights from the colonial age thru now, from the inception of race until now. This eye opening book not only shows the church’s complicity and complacency regarding inequality, but highlights how even denominations that we still have today originated because of disagreements within the church about slavery and segregation. A must read.

There are some better worded reviews on here than this one that could convince anyone to read/listen to this book, and you should, but I can tell you what it did for me. As a white person, I am slowly learning about my own racism and ignorance, little by little, layer by layer. This book was for me a layer revealed, or maybe a deeper look at a layer already open in my heart. I got a glimpse, if ever so small, of the beauty of the black culture that Austin talks about. Stories of her faith community and her family dynamics that are common to Christian black communities are beautiful and close and full of history and togetherness that is unlike the white experience I have had that was also beautiful. The action I am inspired to take is to celebrate this and ask God how I can do that. Thanks Austin for sharing this memoir.

I liked that this book has a lot of good information and examples, research and statistics. I wish my parents would have known to give me tools for naming my emotions and expressing them in a healthy way. This book is both teaching me that now and given me something to pass to my children.

The data Brené has gathered and presents here is really good and I believe it’s something everyone could benefit from. I liked the stories and examples, laughed and, well, almost cried because I can relate. She at times put words to things I haven’t been able to. I love that.

I had started to write that although this book presents great information, I don't know where to go from here. I think I was overwhelmed by all the facts and strategies and areas of my life I want to change. But this being the first day after reading the book, I have already caught myself putting into practice Recognizing Shame and Understanding its Triggers. Although I am at the same time struggling with low self-worth and the fear of what others think of me, I have a renewed hope that things will get better over time.

As other reviewers have said, when you're brought up in shame and rehearsed it for a couple of decades or more, you realize this is going to be a long road to shame resilience. But I believe this book offers the truth needed to roundhouse kick the lies I've been telling myself in the face.

This is my first book to read (well, listen to) about time management and I got a lot out of it. I’m already putting things into practice and feeling good about it. It’s amazing how productive people are and the wisdom there is out there for managing your time. This is a good place to find a lot of info and it references other sources as well. Starting my second listen of this book.

As someone who has not been formally educated in addiction, but only through my personal addictions, I found this book to be incredibly fascinating. I was drawn in to the stories about the patients under Dr. Maté’s care and I hungrily absorbed the scientific and psychological truths he discussed.

I am more importantly left feeling compassion towards our brothers and sisters, mothers and children out there suffering from their addictions, and inspired to be less judgmental.

Daniel did an excellent job narrating. Very professional and his inflections and voice changes for different characters were fun. He is a talented man.

Do yourself a favor and listen to this book. It will be hard to listen and walk away unchanged.

Dale Carnegie books were recommended to me as a way to become a better public speaker. When I came across this audiobook that covers several topics of interest, I used my free credit I received from trying Audible. I’m glad I did!

This course has given me a whole new perspective of public speaking. I was able to put into practice what I’ve been learning (part of the reason I got this audiobook was in preparation for speaking in front of about 100 people) and was really proud of the change I saw in my ability to speak to an audience.

I have committed to listening to a part of this every weekday and the other courses in this audiobook have been an added bonus in my life.

I highly recommend this book if you are looking to be a better public speaker, employee, leader, and person in general.
