Historia
Charles Stross builds a new series with Empire Games. Expanding on the world he created in the Family Trade series, a new generation of paratime travelers walk between parallel universes. The year is 2020. It's 17 years since the Revolution overthrew the last king of the New British Empire, and the newly reconstituted North American Commonwealth is developing rapidly, on course to defeat the French and bring democracy to a troubled world.

fun but...
Revisado: 07-02-21
The jump forward in time is welcome plus new characters. That said, the thick ideological bias is grating, 2d, and predictable... making an otherwise fun story seem wooden and preachy.

Historia
A dissident faction of the Clan, the alternate universe group of families that has traded covertly with our world for a century or more, have carried nuclear devices between the worlds and exploded them in Washington, DC, killing the President of the United States. Now they will exterminate the rest of the Clan and keep Miriam alive only long enough to bear her child, the heir to the throne of their land in the Gruinmarkt world.

Silly ideological venting ruins it
Revisado: 06-30-21
Love the performance. The main character and her developing cadre interact quite nicely. It works for me.
The story is reminiscent of the main character. She is smart and creative, and desperately trying to find herself. Her life is constantly out of control, confused, overwhelmed and disjointed yet she persists. Always searching but never finding much personal growth.
The story has a real quality and stretched one... wonderful at times, then overblown. It swings back and fourth similar to when Miriam is being stuffed into "Helga"...overblown falsity and madeupness.
[spoiler]
I appreciate the story and dialog. The detail is great especially if you're into that. BUT when the author decides to have the U.S. nuke the shit out of a world I lost all connection. Perhaps the disconnect with a "real world" is intentional (we'll see) but the ideological venting I found extremely stiff. I'll hold my nose and finish the series but there's a nagging doubt it'll land in a satisfying place.

Historia
Civil war looms in the Bobiverse in this brand-new, epic-length adventure by Audible number one best seller Dennis E. Taylor. More than a hundred years ago, Bender set out for the stars and was never heard from again. There has been no trace of him despite numerous searches by his clone-mates. Now Bob is determined to organize an expedition to learn Bender’s fate - whatever the cost. But nothing is ever simple in the Bobiverse. Bob’s descendants are out to the 24th generation now, and replicative drift has produced individuals who can barely be considered Bobs anymore.

Wished it would go on forever.

I loved the characters. Excellent narration.
The story is imaginative and while most outcomes were predictable, I fondly awaited their arrival and was completely immersed.
May I have another (billion) please?

Best book of the series. Ridiculous rule of cool and fantastic, memorable side characters. Layered conflict and fantastic climax. Just wonderful.
