Historia
When an elderly, world-famous magician is found dead in his Cherringham mansion, there is nothing suspicious about the passing. According to the doctor, it was a heart attack - plain and simple. But the performer's long-time assistant suspects something sinister and she asks Jack and Sarah to investigate. And like the great magician's amazing tricks, it soon becomes clear that his death is anything but simple: in the world of magic, nothing is ever what it seems, and sometimes even illusions can turn deadly.

One of the good ones!
Revisado: 04-26-25
If, like me, you're still here after 48 installments, I don't need to tell you how good the characters, plots, writing and narration are, but you also know there have been some weak links in the chain. 'A Fatal Illusion, though, is excellent--fast-paced, taut, and surprising.

Another excellent installment in the series
Revisado: 04-21-25
I was among those listeners who loved Lesley Manville and was so disappointed to see a new narrator for this book. I waited six months and gave Fiona Shaw a chance--without Manville's voice so fresh in my memory--and she is splendid. Osman's characters and story are superb, and Shaw is different than Manville but wonderful nevertheless. Give her a chance!

Historia
We treat the body as an afterthought, until it no longer can be. Until the pain or the pleasure is too great. Sinéad Gleeson's life has been marked by terrible illness, including leukemia and debilitating arthritis. As a child, she bathed in the springs of Lourdes, ever hopeful that her body would cooperate, ever looking forward to the day when she could take her body for granted. But just as she turns inward to explore her own pain, and then the marvel of recovery, and then the arrival of her greatest joys—falling in love, becoming a mother—she turns her gaze outward.

Cluny Brown refuses to know her place in society. Last week, she took herself to tea at the Ritz. Then she spent almost an entire day in bed eating oranges. So, to teach her discipline, her uncle, a plumber who has raised the orphaned girl since she was a baby, sends her into service as a parlor maid at one of England's stately manor houses. While everyone around her struggles to keep pace with a rapidly changing world, Cluny continues to be Cluny, transforming those around her with her infectious zest for life.

Charming

Enjoyable story, well-read by the narrator. More compelling and far less conventional than the summary might lead one to expect. charming, funny, and occasionally touching. Recommended.

Fundamentally flawed narration
Revisado: 08-31-22
The narrator for this book does not know how to speak German, Hebrew or Yiddish. This leads to some amusing mis-pronunciations--a character spends time on a "Kibbitz" rather than a "kih-BUTZ"--but the amusement fades and it becomes distracting and offensive. Are there no editors at Audible??

Historia
In this rich and memorable evocation of the fictional South Riding of Yorkshire are the lives, loves and sorrows of the central characters. There is Sarah Burton, fiery young headmistress; Robert Carne of Maythorpe Hall, a councillor tormented by his own disastrous marriage; Jo Astell, a socialist fighting poverty and his own illness; and Mrs Beddows, the first woman Alderman of the district (like Winifred's own mother).

Historia
Sir Edward Feathers has had a brilliant career, from his early days as a lawyer in Southeast Asia, where he earned the nickname Old Filth (FILTH being an acronym for Failed In London Try Hong Kong) to his final working days as a respected judge at the English bar. Yet through it all he has carried with him the wounds of a difficult and emotionally hollow childhood. Now an 80-year-old widower living in comfortable seclusion in Dorset, Feathers is finally free from the regimen of work and the sentimental scaffolding that has sustained him throughout his life.

Historia
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Lyrical language and a subtly-woven story

Be patient--the reader is thrown in the deep end with little in the way of a raft. Just enjoy the language and the ideas and let the story come into focus--which it absolutely and very satisfyingly does.

Historia
Trevor Peacock (The Vicar of Dibley) stars as inspired chef Warwick Hedges in this comedy drama set in an idiosyncratic restaurant in the Cambridgeshire Fens. Warwick’s son, Jack, works alongside his father, which makes him permanently anxious. They are assisted by Samuel, an earthy odd-job man 'who crawled out of the slime with the eels', and Zofia the Polish waitress. Whether hosting unusual guests, dealing with flooding, fuelling father-son rivalry or moving strange stones from the edge of the Fen to his restaurant 'at his own peril', Warwick certainly keeps Mardle Fen on its toes.

Excellent, but by *no* means is this a Brit-Com.
Revisado: 12-28-19
Excellent performances and compelling plot-lines, but how this got classified as a "BBC Comedy" is a mystery. The description--'Kooky dad and his zany family contend with colorful guests and eccentric employees'--seems designed to entice fans of 'Fawlty Towers', which is inaccurate and does a great disservice.

But things quickly turn serious when a popular teacher meets a sudden, violent death. "The Secret of Combe Castle": When the penniless FitzHenrys find themselves victims of a threatening campaign to oust them from their ancestral home, Jack and Sarah are called in to track down the culprit.

Very pleasant series
Revisado: 06-29-18
"Pleasant" may be a bit mild, but these *are* mild. A Cotswold village in the tradition of Miss Marple's St. Mary Mead--all bucolic peace but with bodies turning up--or going missing--at a regular clip.
The characters are engaging and one of the pleasures of the long series of stories is we get to know an increasingly large circle of the villagers and their back-stories. A minor character in one chapter becomes the central figure in another and then when we meet them again later, we know all about them. Just like living in a small town.
The narration is excellent, the writing is crisp and, while you do begin to recognize the rhythm of the way the stories are put together--they are not formulaic.
The Audible Algorithm has been recommending the Cherringham series to me for years, and I resisted--the word "cosy" just put me off. They are only "cosy" in that they are comfortable and low-intensity, but they are not precious or twee. I recommend them highly.
