These stories are so important especially in our current political climate. I’ve listened to several SD books and really enjoyed the things I learned and enjoyed the great story telling but Madame Secretary really inspires me to get in the fight for our country and the most vulnerable among us. It’s sad we still must fight for basic rights, but the battle for common decency still rages against greed and the power hungry. Thank you Francis Perkins for your compassion which fueled your tenacity and love for our country. Thank Stephanie Dray for bringing her story to life!

Exceptional
Revisado: 12-24-24
I love historically based novels and appreciate the tremendous work that goes into researching these characters and their lives. It is sobering to realize that history continues to repeat itself but it is inspiring to hear the stories of these women. Their courage and boldness, their dedication to liberty and justice for all fills me with hope and bolsters my own resolve to follow their example.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

Even though I’d watched the movie and it followed the story line well I really enjoyed listening to this. It was narrated so well. I don’t remember the connection to the elderly Jacob in the movie. This was a wonderful and touching bonus.

Beautiful
Revisado: 11-16-24
This is a beautiful story of redemption and healing and reminder to hold on to your faith in people and in God. It’s not an overly religious book but it weaves faith into a realistic story line effortlessly. The faith and character of this family and their community is a reminder of what faith should look like. It’s also a hopeful for message for those of dealing with mentally ill loved ones. I needed it very much. It’s not fluff but it is hopeful and hope is what makes this often tragic life worth living.

Not Bad
Revisado: 10-19-24
The storyline was pretty typical of this type book-nothing earth shattering but a good story. I enjoyed the botany side of it as I am a gardener. The romance did not have the usual intensity one comes to expect with this genre. I came close to stopping it MANY times due to the narrator. Her voice is great for this type of book but her delivery drove me nuts. Dynamics are so important. It became stressful to listen to what should’ve been a very easy listen because she never changed the ebb and flow of hee reading. She has great potential as she has a lovely voice/accent but I know I won’t finish another book she’s narrating if I don’t hear immediate improvement in her delivery.

Narrator😱
Revisado: 09-12-24
Enjoyed the story but the narrator made me want to throw my phone. Love her voice but there’s no dynamic in her delivery. It makes me feel like I’m holding my breath the entire book-too whispery, too sweet, too dramatic when it’s not called for, kind of depressing regardless of the context.
If the story hadn’t held my attention I would not have endured it.
I will give Stacy Reid another try because I think she’s a great writer. I also think the narrator has great potential but I really hope she develops appropriate dynamics especially if she continues narrating this series.

Enjoyed it
Revisado: 04-16-24
I really enjoyed this light read-big Karen Slaughter fan so yes this was really light by comparison. It did touch on some really tough subjects without being a downer. I really appreciated the way the writer taught a practical lesson in tough love and didn’t give a total Polly Anna finish. I will look for more from this author. Now for a critique for the narrator. Please do some work on your delivery-especially male characters. Everyone sounds stoned.

Better every time
Revisado: 04-08-24
Karen Slaughter’s Will Trent series just keeps getting better. I’m going to be so sad when it’s over. Thank you for the education you’re providing through your books! Rape is so glossed over but the damage is with us for a lifetime. One of Faith’s last statements was a perfect reflection of my own feelings about living in Tennessee. Our state legislature is archaic. I never thought it possible to take the huge steps back that have been taken, but here we are. Scary times to be a woman.

Another Great One
Revisado: 04-05-24
I am a huge Karen Slaughter fan. The Will Trent series just keeps getting better. That said, this one was not for everyone and I would caution anyone with sexual trauma to be very careful with this one. I really respect and appreciate the truthful, realistic way KS handled such a delicate topic. I look forward to more in this series.
