Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

Great research and chronology but a bit uneven.
Revisado: 09-02-24
I wish I heard the prolog before I bought the book. This was a book written by a New Yorker for New Yorkers. With every opportunity the author disparages a person he doesn’t agree with just before he presents their material. While simultaneously ignoring the faults others he favors. Which results in a pretty uneven account. He does take a few swipes at Lincoln but Lincoln is of course a Republican and that is inconvenient at best for the author.
If you’re a globalist looking for an echo chamber you’re going to absolutely love this book. If you’ve traveled a bit, read a lot and like to look deeper into the complicated existence of history, this really isn’t satisfying.

Historia
For most of the last hundred years, Biloxi was known for its beaches, resorts, and seafood industry. But it had a darker side. It was also notorious for corruption and vice, everything from gambling, prostitution, bootleg liquor, and drugs to contract killings. The vice was controlled by small cabal of mobsters, many of them rumored to be members of the Dixie Mafia.

Tedious, bland and of course woke
Revisado: 08-13-22
It’s a shame to see a decent writer have to write about such boring characters because interesting characters may be offensive..
This is the kind of tedious drivel that would be fast tracked at Netflix if anyone still watched Netflix.
Shame his first book seemed so promising.

Great story, however uhm the reader was a little distracting. I mean hey, I’m no voice actor but this guy plays emotions a bit too emotional. Does that make sense Mr Mathewson?

Terrible
Revisado: 04-06-21
I forced myself to finish this book. I thought, it can’t possible continue to be this bad. But it is terrible, from start to finish.
I don’t blame the author for writing such a terrible book, I know if I wrote a book it would be awful. But I blame the publishers who, I’m thinking never read it. Just looked at it and said “golly there’s lots of words there, let’s go for it”.
As a side note, awesome performance by the narrator Ms Larkin. She’s a true pro who somehow made it through this dribble.
I feel like Chbosky not only owes me a refund but needs to come to my house and put in 30hrs of yard work to pay me back for stealing 30hrs of my life.
