Historia
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

Skip the movie. Read the book.
Revisado: 02-09-24
Millions of people will have the mistaken notion that Joe Ranz was nearly removed from his team just prior to an Olympic race. That's because they only experienced the Hollywood version of this story. Read the book! it's well written. Well narrated. Engaging. And real.
This book has made a rowing fan of me. And Husky fan too.

No no no no no
Revisado: 12-14-21
This is absolutely and positively the worst book I can remember reading. I don't even know if I can list all the ways it is terrible. Suffice to say that the plot is rediculous. The writing feels like it was a high school creative writing project. The story feels like a cheesy Lifetime movie. The title references a character that is barely in the story.
But the voicing is pretty good.

Not the meaningful story I was expecting
Revisado: 10-20-21
I found that this (and War and Peace) were disappointing novels. They are full of irrelevant subplots and uninteresting characters. Some of that might need the result of the translation ... really, do 19th century Russians use the expression "by jove"? And the reader was positively hard to listen to.

Historia
In this revolutionary book, renowned MIT economists Abhijit V. Banerjee and Esther Duflo take on this challenge, building on cutting-edge research in economics explained with lucidity and grace. Original, provocative, and urgent, Good Economics for Hard Times makes a persuasive case for an intelligent interventionism and a society built on compassion and respect. It is an extraordinary achievement, one that shines a light to help us appreciate and understand our precariously balanced world.

Packed with valuable insight
Revisado: 07-06-20
A person will learn a lot reading this book. It is loaded with current economic thinking. And much of it backed by data. Where they're is little or no data, the authors are careful to point it out.
This could be an impotent read for everyone. Sadly, it is a bit of a grind to get through.

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

I liked this book, but wasn't riveted to it like other Larsen books. Given the choice, I would recommend Dead Wake over this.

Historia
A young woman is in love with a successful surgeon, a man torn between his love for her and his incorrigible womanizing. His mistress, a free-spirited artist, lives her life as a series of betrayals—while her other lover, earnest, faithful, and good, stands to lose everything because of his noble qualities. In a world where lives are shaped by irrevocable choices and fortuitous events, and everything occurs but once, existence seems to lose its substance, its weight. Hence we feel “the unbearable lightness of being."

A little disappointing
Revisado: 04-30-19
I got the feeling, while listening to this book, that that something was lost in the translation. The translator's attempt to give the same poetic as color as the source falls flat. And how can a story with so much sex be so completely devoid of eroticism? And why spend so many words on the death of a dog and so little on the deaths of the characters? This story tries so hard to be serious but in the end is trite.

Solid advice based on ancedotal stories
Revisado: 03-12-19
Here's what bugged me about this book ... the whole concept of the OKRs is based on Andy Grove's experience at Intel. But Intel's success was a marketing push that included now technology innovation ... their "success" arguably set the industry back for a decade.

In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

I liked this book from the first words. it's a thorough and engaging story of fraud and corruption ... a perfect example of how not to run a company.
And I hope they throw Holmes in jail for a long time.

Historia
Most historians study the smallest slivers of time, emphasizing specific dates, individuals, and documents. But what would it look like to study the whole of history, from the big bang through the present day - and even into the remote future? How would looking at the full span of time change the way we perceive the universe, the earth, and our very existence? These were the questions David Christian set out to answer when he created the field of "Big History", the most exciting new approach to understanding where we have been, where we are, and where we are going.

Interesting but boring
Revisado: 08-09-18
is that an oxymoron? This book is a great introduction to the current thinking regarding creation of the universe and evolution of man. that said, it's pretty dry and a bit boring to listen to.
