Great story w lots of twists
Revisado: 06-11-19
Plots within plots, and stories that straddle time make this book a true page turner. I couldn’t wait to find out what’s next and to answer the question, “How does it end?”

Engaging story but...

Unfortunately, the narrator struggled with pronouncing the Dutch names. This bothered me because I speak Dutch. It probably would not bother the average listener, however.

Picoult's best.
Revisado: 12-21-16
Couldn't put this down. Eloquent, gripping, and cutting all at once. This novel needs to be read by all Americans, especially as we struggle with the fact that we have elected a blatant racist as president.

Historia
Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

Great story. Very engaging. Bet everyone knows an Ove. One thing for the narrator; "dour" does not rhyme with "sour".

Required reading for everyone but especially politicians
Revisado: 02-03-16
Of all of the issues facing humans, mass extinction, with ties to global warming, and caused by none other than humans, is, ironically, the very thing that could wipe us out as a species as well. This is a compelling story, very well researched, and extremely well articulated. It is also a rude awakening.

Revisado: 03-30-11
Having little knowledge of finance I learned much. Mostly I gained appreciation for the unmitigated avarice of unregulated investment banking. Well-written and well-researched. Makes you feel like you were there.

Well-written, outstanding narrator
Revisado: 02-18-11
This book is almost better heard than read because of the Jamaican patois. The reader nails the Jamaican and switches effortlessly to other accents including "proper" British, cockney and Irish.
The descriptions are so vivid that I can still "see" each character in my mind's eye. The story would make for a compelling, albeit disturbing, movie.

In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women—mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends—view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.

Revisado: 09-05-09
Overt American racism in the guise of Jim Crow laws existed in my lifetime (I'm old, but not that old). It still blows my mind! This book gives us a window on that relatively recent time and place. Well written. Excellent narration. I felt like I was there.
