Historia
It is 1866 and Walter Moody has come to make his fortune upon the New Zealand goldfields. On arrival, he stumbles across a tense gathering of 12 local men, who have met in secret to discuss a series of unsolved crimes. A wealthy man has vanished, a whore has tried to end her life, and an enormous fortune has been discovered in the home of a luckless drunk. Moody is soon drawn into the mystery: a network of fates and fortunes that is as complex and exquisitely patterned as the night sky.

Gripping storyline.
Revisado: 01-15-15
It took me ages to settle into the story and understand the characters. When I did, I really enjoyed the history, the goldfields life, the language and the portrayal of life in NZ mining settlements in the mid 1800s. However, I feel that the author took too long to get to certain parts and it was quite repetitious sometimes. It's not a book that I'd recommend to my friend
but am glad I've read it.

Historia
Mattie Engel is one of the rising stars at Private Berlin, and believes she’s seen the worst of people in her previous life with the Berlin police force. That is until Chris, her colleague - and until recently, her fiancé - is found dead, brutally murdered in an old slaughterhouse outside the city. The slaughterhouse is filled with bodies. But just as Private begin their investigations, the building explodes, wiping out all evidence of the crimes, and nearly killing Mattie and her team.

Suspense, history and horrifying
Revisado: 02-23-13
Where does Private Berlin rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I found the story line and it's involvement in the history of East and West Berlin credible and exciting. I consider some of the graphic descriptions in this novel completely unnecessary. When I read a Paterson novel I expect crime and suspense. This novel I couldn't say I enjoyed and wished I hadn't listened to it. If I'd been reading it, at least I could have skimmed some of the more sadistic pages and may have been able to write a more positive review.
If you’ve listened to books by James Patterson and Mark Sullivan before, how does this one compare?
Have read and listened to James Patterson novels, not sure about the combination.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Ari Fliakos and January Lavoy ?
The narrators were excellent and did a fantastic job.
If you could take any character from Private Berlin out to dinner, who would it be and why?
I wouldn't take out any character.
Any additional comments?
Yes, I would have just inferred the terrible tortures and injustices. Perhaps just a few (or one short) paragraph would have sufficed. As authors, I'm sure they could have justified Chris's, Ilona's and everyone elses behaviour.
