Historia
Rosie and Chad Lowan are barely making ends meet in New York City when they receive life-changing news: Chad’s late uncle has left them his luxury apartment at the historic Windermere in glamorous Murray Hill. With its prewar elegance and impeccably uniformed doorman, the building is the epitome of old New York charm. One would almost never suspect the dark history lurking behind its perfectly maintained facade.

Not For Me
Revisado: 05-22-24
I managed to make it halfway through Chapter 5, but this book exudes negativity to the point where I dread pressing play (and I normally look forward to my audio books). In just these first pages, Rosie has witnessed a violent death, discovered her husband's deceptive behavior, and described childhood abuse. It's all gloom, doom and destruction, not to mention that even with the majority of the book left, I could probably venture a guess as to several things that will probably happen in the story.
I just did not enjoy this one at all, but I know there will be others who will, so good luck!

Historia
It's Christmas at St Mary's and time for the traditional illicit jump. Except this one is perfectly legal. It's Major Guthrie's last jump. To the Battle of Bannockburn, no less. An important moment in history for two nations - one that warrants everyone's full attention. But Max soon finds herself grappling with a near-lethal game of pooh sticks, another avian incursion and two turbulent teenagers intent on piloting their own illegal jump. And that's all before they even get near 14th-century Scotland. For this is St Mary's, and nothing is ever simple.

Very Light Read
Revisado: 11-13-17
After listening to about 70 hours of the Outlander series, I was ready for a quick, light story to fill my commute time from home to work each day. This story suited that purpose, but it is not what I would call a great literary work.
The story and its characters are fine, but there are several places where the author missed an opportunity to intrigue the listeners by adding just another reference that would have helped the pieces fall together nicely. In other instances, the clothing details are described all the way down to the pressed seams inside the garment. I would just recommend a little more balance on the next story - more meat on the bones, so to speak.

Would you listen to Five Short Stories by Women again? Why?
Yes, I would listen to the stories again because I feel that there are many nuances that are hard to pick up on the first listen.
What did you like best about this story?
Five different authors and totally different stories gave me an opportunity to sample other genres.

Historia
Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells - taken without her knowledge - became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than 60 years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects.

Interesting, Educational and True Story
Revisado: 09-14-17
This is the true story of how the biological cells from one woman changed the landscape of medical research. Although the material is at times scientific, the author does an excellent job of keeping such passages brief. Anyone who enjoys reading stories about family will find a lot to like about this book.

Although the topic is well developed, it is far too easy to get distracted. I had to review certain sections because my mind found it so easy to wander from the narrative. I've never had this issue with an audio book before, so it was truly disappointing for me.

Historia
Sixty-nine-year-old Arthur Pepper lives a simple life. He gets out of bed at precisely 7:30 a.m., just as he did when his wife, Miriam, was alive. He dresses in the same gray slacks and mustard sweater-vest; waters his fern, Frederica; and heads out to his garden. But on the one-year anniversary of Miriam's death, something changes. Sorting through Miriam's possessions, Arthur finds an exquisite gold charm bracelet he's never seen before.

Excellent Story!
Revisado: 01-20-17
What made the experience of listening to The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper the most enjoyable?
This was a wonderful story with characters that were so real. I loved how the story followed Arthur on his journey that gave him so much more than he bargained for... I love that he didn't give up, even when he wanted to, even when it would have been easy to - he persevered.
What other book might you compare The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper to and why?
It is similar to a Man Named Ove, but just slightly.
Which scene was your favorite?
I loved every story about every charm and how they were woven together to paint a picture of Miriam's life.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Although I could quite possibly read or listen to this book all at once, I rather liked starting at the beginning of the story of one charm and ending before the next part of the journey began.
Any additional comments?
Fantastic read! I believe this was one that your system recommended based on my prior selections, so keep up the great work... can't wait for the next book you recommend!!!!

This is a very well researched and written book with such a great story that you will get lost in time. The narrator did as good a job as anyone else could have with all of the languages involved. I hope the next book from that I select from this author is as well received.
