Beautiful Story
Revisado: 08-28-24
I love hearing this author’s story. She tells her story with honesty, vulnerability, and humor, and I think it’s a story people need to hear. Also, how refreshing to hear a thru hiking story from the perspective of a person of color that includes her own and other LGBTQ experiences on trail! I love listening to hiking/adventure books but struggle to find any that aren’t written by the same white men with the same perspective. I really enjoyed the author’s style and hope to read more books of hers in the future!

What a rich colorful story. There is so much history and culture and curandera traditional knowledge & beliefs and love and life and FAITH and much more shared in this incredible story. I was transported to another time and become completely drawn into the complicated & fascinating history of the Urrea family!

LOVE this book!
Revisado: 08-24-21
I can not even describe what a beautiful story this is. The author shares unimaginable life experiences through human feelings we can all relate to. Honestly, I almost didn’t give this book a chance simply because it didn’t have many reviews at the time I purchased. I’m grateful to have learned my lesson though and to have had the opportunity to hear the truly incredible outlook the author has because of the life she has lived. Bharti will inspire and touch anyone who reads this. The narrator’s voice is lovely too. Very well read and I felt like she drew my into the story with the expression & honesty in her voice.

Historia
Ralph Elllison's Invisible Man is a monumental novel, one that can well be called an epic of modern American Negro life. It is a strange story, in which many extraordinary things happen, some of them shocking and brutal, some of them pitiful and touching—yet always with elements of comedy and irony and burlesque that appear in unexpected places. It is a book that has a great deal to say and which is destined to have a great deal said about it.

Incredible story. Wow. And the narration makes it come alive. The narrator is performing the entire novel himself…almost feels like watching a play (but actually listening to a play).

Historia
Like thousands of Aboriginal children in the United States, Canada, and elsewhere in the colonized world, Xatsu'll chief Bev Sellars spent part of her childhood as a student in a church-run residential school. These institutions endeavored to "civilize" Native children through Christian teachings; forced separation from family, language, and culture; and strict discipline. In this frank and poignant memoir of her years at St. Joseph's Mission, Sellars breaks her silence about the residential school's lasting effects on her and her family and eloquently articulates her own path to healing.

Important Sorry Beautifully Told
Revisado: 04-29-21
I have heard stories about residential schools in the US from Indigenous people here but the stories are usually a short recall that isn’t very personal. I’m sure they are not easy memories to share. Bev somehow manages to tell her personal stories, along with generational stories, with dignity & laughter & directness. The laughter she shares is beautiful & reminds the reader that people are more then what they suffered & more then their ongoing struggle. Thank you to Bev for being willing to share. I hope many many people are able to listen to her story & make connections between the past and present. It sure helped me to see more clearly.

This book is not what I expected. I’m not sure what I expected but the story quickly wrapped me in the intertwining stories of love & fear & struggle & connection. I am working in the San Xavier District of the Tohono O'odham land over the next couple weeks and it feels intentional that this book fell into my lap without knowing much about it

Historia
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

Thank you to the negative reviewers. You actually helped me realize how much this book works. I’ve been reading a lot about other people’s experiences but this is the first book that has helped me to take a deeper look at my own. If you’re hesitating, please stop & start listening. The information contained in a short 6 hours could change your life & possibly others too.

I felt like I understood my dog better after listening to this. Seriously. Richard Adams has an understanding & connection with non-human animals that comes out beautifully in his writing. It can be a hard story at times, only because the truth put in front of us. I’m grateful for writers like Mr. Adams who are willing to write about this truth and place it in such an incredible story.

Revisado: 02-05-20
I learned so much listening to this book. I’m glad it was written. I’m not sure there is another full story about the Riot Grrrl movement out there & I appreciate all the information contained in this book.
On another note, the audiobook skipped pretty bad for me quite a few times. I’m not sure if it’s the recording or a problem with the app. Hopefully it’s not in the recording & audible will fix this soon
