Historia
In 17th-century Persia, a 14-year-old woman believes she will be married within the year. When her beloved father dies, she and her mother find themselves alone and without a dowry. With nowhere else to go, they are forced to sell the brilliant turquoise rug the young woman has woven to pay for their journey to Isfahan, where they will work as servants for her uncle, a rich rug designer in the court of the legendary Shah Abbas the Great.

I could never be a 2nd wife
Revisado: 08-01-09
This could almost be titled Carpets, Carpets, Sucks to be a Poor Muslim Woman, and More Carpets. Not the most enthralling story, but an interesting look into another world. Disappointing support from her family. A portion of time focuses on her affair with her lover/husband. Tastefully presented, but could be explicit to some readers. The narrator definitely has a raspy voice which takes some getting used to.

Historia
Balram Halwai is a complicated man. Servant. Philosopher. Entrepreneur. Murderer. Balram tells us the terrible and transfixing story of how he came to be a success in life - having nothing but his own wits to help him along. Through Balram's eyes, we see India as we've never seen it before: the cockroaches and the call centers, the prostitutes and the worshippers, the water buffalo and, trapped in so many kinds of cages that escape is (almost) impossible, the white tiger.
With a charisma as undeniable as it is unexpected, Balram teaches us that religion doesn't create morality and money doesn't solve every problem.

How to become an Entrepreneur
Revisado: 08-01-09
Humorous and entertaining throughout. His observations on life in general are quirky and kept me giggling. Honestly, I rolled my eyes when I heard the narrator's accent at the beginning and realized it was going to be told in a series of letters, but soon I was looking forward to my next listening session. I really ended up enjoying this.

Historia
In Out of Captivity, Gonsalves, Stansell, and Howes recount for the first time their amazing tale of survival, friendship, and, ultimately, rescue, tracing their five and a half years as hostages of the FARC. Their story takes you inside one of the world's most notorious terrorist organizations, going behind enemy lines with vivid and haunting imagery.

Not an average workday
Revisado: 08-01-09
Loved it! Nice, clear narration, too. I first heard about this book in an NPR interview with two of the authors. Amazing how these men sustained hope for so long against such overwhelming odds. Their accounts don't sugarcoat life as captives of Colombian rebels. It can be just a little gritty, but without being depressing. I want to hear if the Freedom Ride ever happens!
