THIS WAS A DISAPPOINTMENT AFTER WATCHING HBO ADAPTATION. I FOUND IT A MEANDERING ATTEMPT AT CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, ACCOMPANIED BY SIMPLISTIC PSYCHOLOGICAL CLICHES. IT IS NOT A “MYSTERY/THRILLER” LIKE THE TV ADAPTATION.

Evil and Psychopathy

Dr. Michael Stone has produced a most impressive analysis of psychopaths that will serve as a leading reference. Weaving an intricate pattern that draws from many different disciplines he successfully argues for an improved classification system to differentiate the many subtypes of criminal personalities, clarification of how the term ",evil" is best understood , and puts forth a theoretical model incorporating social and behavioral evidence. He makes liberal use of well I own cases, which are edited to accommodate the sensitivities of the reader. His eclectic approach is demonstrated by his familiarity with Dante Alighieri, Puccini, and the prefrontal cortex. The search for transtheoretical hypotheses in exploring origins of criminal behavior is fortunate to have Dr Stone's
considerable talents.

A great book for the amateur sleuth or wannabe mystery writer. Down to earth, limited jargon, and aimed at readers who want to understand criminal behavior.

An introduction to the concepts of energy as expressed by auras and other aspects of energy healing. The author draws from many different cultures to develop an energy based approach--- so reading auras, understanding chakras, appeals to angels, Reiki, and folk remedies are discussed. The reader is left hopeful that these treatment interventions are effective but not all have the same level of acceptance among energy healers. Nevertheless a provocative introduction to the topic.

Professor Andrew Newberg presents an outstanding synthesis of a very complex subject, the latest research on brain activity, measured with the latest neuroimaging and other biological methods, to determine their relationship to prayer, meditation, mysticism, faith, speaking in tongues, and other characteristics of religious people. This course is appropriate for a general adult audience however it will be appreciated by both theology and scientific audiences.

UNDERSTANDING CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER

This is a wonderful book on the how to engage in contemplative prayer. As a Jesuit, the greatest appeal will be for Christians, but it should also be of interest for those of other faiths, many of who developed a mystic sub group well before Christians. Not surprisingly the author often cites St Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, and other contemplatives, such as Merton, DeMello, and others. The reader should keep in mind the contemplative Catholics differ substantially in how they carry out the contemplative life, while still staying true to the religious values of the Church. One important point Thibodeaux emphasizes is that this practice is not intended to make the participant a hermit, but rather it enhances a person's ability to follow God's plan. This book should be of special interest to people who meditate, because it presents a different form. Also students of comparative religion will appreciate the detail provided.

This was 30 minute exercise that managed to tell us who are not Fundamentalist Christians what is widely know. Specifically that the Gospels have inconsistencies among them, that the life of the historic Jesus cannot be inferred from them, that he was influenced by Eastern Philosophy, perhaps through the Essen sect of Judaism, and that the gospel authors relied on pagan mythology to create a symbol of Christo, Messiah, King Arthur, Archetypal story. He never ties this in with Christian Mystics, who are in no way represent a unified theosophy.

Very good presentation of difficult material. I am not a professional pianist--- just an old guy who plays for fun . I learned to play using the named note of the chord. As I played more I found I had to learn the Roman numeral system (I--V--etc). It was very tough to switch, and I go back and forth, using the numeral system when improvising and with songs in a key I don't play in very often. I had to read along with his book to really understand his message. Some great pearls in there though.
