Fantastic premise, rather let down by detail

I read the first book in this series and decided to get this one to listen to as I knitted.

To begin with, the narrator was really good. She did a great job of telling the story. Unfortunately the story let her down.

I found the repetitions of background to be frustrating, eg we know how the "stamper" works you don't need to tell us every time you pick it up.

I found, and this is purely subjective, the characters dimness to be frustrating. Hiding details, being unable to make perfectly simple connections, non communication, etc

There were no real surprises in the plot

The New Species Series are one of my all time favourite series and one I return to on a regular basis. Listening to this book I found my self angry for no reason or so bored that I just lost concentration. I was plugging away through about 2/3 of the book before I figured out what was wrong. The voice actress

The voice actress did the narration bits ok, but when she spoke for the characters, particularly the New Species (a genetic mix between predatory animals and humans and constantly referred to as gruff) she spoke like a sloth. The human characters spoke slowly, but it was only just noticeable, but the New Species, all the New Species, spoke slowly with attention paid to pronunciation, even when there was an emergency or anger. She also was unable to provide sufficiently different voices for the characters, this, for me, wasn't as big a thing, but if you're going to be paid to do it, you should do it right.

I couldn't finish the book, once I'd figured out what was happening, I just had to admit defeat and move on to another book.

I will try the New Species Series again, but not with Slade. I'll jump much further in to see if her style improves, but as it stands her performance was wrong and in some ways insulting to the concept of the characters.

I love these books and found the narration style, overall really good. There's only one gripe I have...

I don't give characters voices, I read far to fast for that to happen, and I found this voice actress did everyone's voice really well except for Rowans. When someone is described as a wretched bitch and comes back with HBIC - Head Bitch In Charge, when someone's written voice is all snarky comebacks and whip fast zingers then you'd expect their "voice" to be much more lived in, sarcastic toned, snark. The voice actress chose to go with sunshine and lollypops instead.

Needless to say when you're expecting snarky (I know I'm using this word a lot, it's the only polite one I can) sarcasm tones and attitude and get soft, sweet and melodious it does tend to take you out of the moment.

Otherwise this book lived up to it's read.

If you could sum up Naked in Death in three words, what would they be?

Just quirky enough.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I keep returning to these books. I can't binge them, but they are a recurring favourite.
