…what did I just listen to?
Revisado: 08-30-23
As other reviews have noted, the cliffhanger ending is really unsatisfying. But I want to know, what genre is this?! It’s far too dark for a romance and too tragic to be a farce…it’s also not actually a regency romance, as it’s set in the early 1759s. While it’s cleverly written, it’s a weird, wild ride. Not a good choice if you’re looking for something light or fun.

A delightful Regency confection

How fun! If you enjoy Georgette Heyer’s lighter fare, especially Friday’s Child, Cotillion, and The Convenient Marriage, you’ll almost certainly enjoy this sweet, hilarious, spirited romp. You might be able to predict the ending…but I was quite surprised by how we arrived there!

He marries the pretty and treasured Rosalie, the daughter of an American millionaire. But on their return to England, Nigel and his mother control and isolate Rosalie from her family. Compelling & strange
Revisado: 08-30-22
At first this novel seemed like it might only be a lower-quality knockoff of Henry James’s Portrait of a Lady, but once I got beyond the America vs. England theorizing, I fell in love with the characters. I finished this a week ago and am still thinking about it! Even though I knew the ending was happy due to reading other reviews, the plot was so dark at points I couldn’t figure out how it would end. Although the good characters are unbelievably perfect and the bad characters are totally unsympathetic villains, I would still recommend this if you like long novels with strong, interesting female protagonists like Middlemarch & Portrait. But be warned that the reading performance, & even the sound quality, is pretty mediocre. Content warning: the abusive relationship at the beginning is very well-described.

Historia
Frances Hodgson Burnett published The Making of a Marchioness in 1901. She had written Little Lord Fauntleroy 15 years before and would write The Secret Garden in 10 years' time; it is these two books for which she is best known. Yet Marchioness was one of Nancy Mitford's favourite books, was considered 'the best novel Mrs Hodgson Burnett wrote' by Marghanita Laski, and is taught on a university course in America together with novels such as Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, and Daisy Miller.

Dated but enjoyable
Revisado: 05-14-22
The first part of this story was absolutely delightful, with a sympathetic protagonist whose situation feels genuinely poignant, even modern. Hodgson-Burnett explores Emily’s experience of life and society, and her character, orchestrating a heart-rending dénouement. The second part gets weird fast! Emily drifts out of focus as bad actors plot against her, and although the suspense is fun, the casual Edwardian racism and Hodgson-Burnett’s repetitive descriptions of Emily as “childlike” made it less enjoyable than the first part. Still worth a listen if you’re a fan of old-fashioned romances!

Absolutely delightful!
Revisado: 06-05-19
With the exception of the first few chapters, which neatly and efficiently establish the cast of characters but aren't incredibly engaging, this is one of the most fun and most touching Heyer romances I've read. Even once you can tell how it's going to end -- which takes a while! -- you can't quite figure out how Heyer is going to get everyone there. The character development is realistic and sweet without being predictable, and the ending is such a satisfying resolution that it made me laugh and cry at the same time (to be fair, I am a diehard Heyer fan, so your mileage may vary). I'm sure that much of my enjoyment of this was also do to Phyllida Nash's fantastic narration; she's able to express a lot of emotion and character with her voice, without it ever being distracting or sounding too over-the-top, and she's even good in French :)
