Historia
In Osaka, two strangers, Jake and Mariko, miss a flight, and over dinner, discover they've both brutally lost loved ones whose paths crossed with the same beguiling woman no one has seen since. Following traces this mysterious person left behind, Jake travels from country to country gathering chilling testimonies from others who encountered her across the decades—a trail of shattered souls that eventually leads him to Theo, a dying sculptor in rural New Mexico, who knows the woman better than anyone—and might just hold the key to who, or what, she is.

The reflection of humanity with confusion
Revisado: 03-29-25
The jumping with no transition and flipping of characters and timeline in the story. It’s sudden and takes a few minutes to figure out where you are supposed to be in the narrative. When you catch up, it’s great. Then you are lost again. I don’t want to work this hard if I am not reading Melville, Fitzgerald or Jane Austin from another time period. That’s expected. Struggling with a modern author, is disappointing. I kept backing up thinking it was me. Nope. Good premise but bad execution.

Historia
Ninety-one-year-old Gretel Fernsby has lived in the same well-to-do mansion block in London for decades. She lives a quiet, comfortable life, despite her deeply disturbing, dark past. She doesn’t talk about her escape from Nazi Germany at age 12. She doesn’t talk about the grim post-war years in France with her mother. Most of all, she doesn’t talk about her father, who was the commandant of one of the Reich’s most notorious extermination camps. All The Broken Places moves between Gretel’s girlhood in Germany to present-day London as a woman haunted by the past.

Unexpected story line with strong character development. I know the author has me when I think about the characters when I am not reading it.

Historia
My husband and I are fighting for our lives in hospital after a terrible car accident. But despite my pain, all I can think about is what our families will find behind our front door. The scarf that has been all over the news, belonging to a dead young woman with honey-coloured hair. I have to speak to the police before my husband can. I’m drifting in and out of consciousness, but when I hear my wife talking to the police, accusing me of the murder of an innocent woman, a cold fear grips me. I know I’ve got a temper.

Twists and turns
Revisado: 06-06-24
Not a masterpiece, BUT a good listen to book. I enjoyed not predicting the ending without the author making me feel lost. Am I running out to tell friends? No. Am I happy I read? Yes.

Historia
Cassandra Penelope Dankworth is a creature of habit. She likes what she likes (museums, jumpsuits, her boyfriend, Will) and strongly dislikes what she doesn't (mess, change, her boss drinking out of her mug). Her life runs in a pleasing, predictable order…until now. Then, something truly unexpected happens: Cassie discovers she can go back and change the past. One small rewind at a time, Cassie attempts to fix the life she accidentally obliterated, but soon she'll discover she's trying to fix all the wrong things.

Struggled in the middle
Revisado: 07-10-23
It’s clear Reese Witherspoon and I have a different taste in books. While I agree it is a poignant view into autism, it could have been at least 25% shorter with a less tedious impact. I almost stopped in the middle after being annoyed with the Groundhog Day effect. I gave it 3 stars for its insightfulness on autism and individual’s perspectives.

Couldn’t put it down for only those that live in books
Revisado: 08-19-22
This was a frustrating read. It’s so heartbreaking that you have to know the ending. When I think about a story while not reading, I know I will finish no matter what. It was a look into madness and despair that is hard to erase from your memory. Maybe it should have been 5 stars, but I was so emotionally frustrated with opportunities and bad decisions that could have led also to a positive ending. That being said, I realize I have never experienced such a wreaking of my soul. I love the message at the end. We all live in our own bubble even though monsters exist right next to us.

Not for me.
Revisado: 04-20-16
It's an ok book. But, the confusion lasts too long. A bit redundant. I hate spoilers, but this is the most "what is the result?" book I've read in a long time. Hanging is one thing. Left cold and uncaring is another.
