I absolutely love this series. Ryan and his relationship with little Ry warm my heart. Ryan also has a great relationship with Ray as the unlikely pair solve crime.

Very hard to listen to

The story was good but the narrator is one of those who reads to the end of the line of text, not to the end of the sentence. It’s very distracting and hard to follow

Worst narrator ever

I usually live Ed James books but I couldn’t get into this one at all because the narration was so awful. I’ve already bought the next book but if I hadn’t done that I wouldn’t go near it.

Poor narration nearly ruined a great story

Val McDermid is not capable of writing a bad book but the narrator was one of the worst I’ve ever had to plough through. I have no problem at all with someone just reading the book rather than performing the parts, but this narrator read each line, not each sentence. It was terrible.

Not a mystery/thriller

Why did this book pop up in my mystery/thriller search?

It's by Joy Ellis and I like a lot of her other stuff. I stuck with it to the end in the hope that someone would be murdered. No such luck. Dull. dull. dull.

I knew from the reviews that the narration was terrible, but as the third book in the series relates back to the first I thought I would give it a go.
This is just the raw recording! Every mistake, repetition and even a few superfluous "sorries" are all there.
Audible, this is not the standard we expect!

Where does Privileged Lives rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book ranks in my top 15%. It is intriguing and multilayered - hard to put down.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Privileged Lives?

I was trying to pick when it was set and the appearance of AIDS steered me to the 1980s.

What about Christian Rummel’s performance did you like?

His performance gave the impression that he had read and enjoyed the book.

If you could sum up Whisper in the Dark in three words, what would they be?

Really enjoyable listen

What other book might you compare Whisper in the Dark to and why?

The voodoo aspect of the book was unexpected, but quite fascinating. It was a similar mould to the John Connolly books, where some of the characters are beyond the grave, but the theme is not overdone.

What about Scott Brick’s performance did you like?

When Scott Brick is reading a boring book his delivery makes it even worse, but when he's reading an interesting book his style is very listenable.
