Strange things are happening there. There are voices on the wind, and people are disappearing. With the enemy outside and ghosts within, Colonel-Commissar Gaunt and his men must face their fears – for only in death does duty end.

Terra is besieged. The outcome of the war lies on a knife edge. The Warmaster Horus’ bloody seven-year crusade has led to this – the cradle of humanity, where he is to kill his father, the Emperor. With the war at this critical juncture, Sanguinius, primarch of the loyalist Blood Angels, braves the horrors of the Warmaster’s flagship, The Vengeful Spirit, with a single purpose in mind – to slay his brother Horus, decapitate the Heresy once and for all, and stop the forces of Chaos from taking Terra.

amazing but slightly repetitive
Revisado: 11-26-23
hit it out of the park, with a great twist and a brutal end, but the constant repeating of the warp Flux and overt description of it over and over again felt like length padding.
but that is my only qualm, fully enjoyed it!

great!
Revisado: 10-06-23
thoroughly enjoyed it and surprised a few times.
have loved the officio assassanorum since The Beast Arises series and this brings back some of those feelings without seeing much of the politics surrounding it.
a great look into a feudal world and its politics as well as the officio, hope to see these characters again someday.
also it's nice seeing a base human centric in the indomnius Era and not a space marine in sight! especially when the only other options it seems is cadians and more cadians.

brotherhood above all. -spoilers near the end-
Revisado: 09-14-23
Besides learning somewhat about their creation during the siege of Terra, the Grey knights never really pulled at my interest. until this novel that is.
first, we get to see a narrative about a squad of the knights. how intertwined their thoughts and consciousness are with how they communicate through their bond, you hear all the time from regular astartes about the importance of brotherhood, but the knights are another level entirely.
THEN on top of that we get a PoV on the First War of Armageddon AND the Months of Shame with the inquisition and space wolves??
honestly want to see more of Hyperion and Mal. especially after learning he was in Ravenor!!!

something something secrets truths
Revisado: 08-10-23
first off, narrator was great. excellent performer and setter of mood.
but nothing happened. like I heard the words secret and truth so many times if I played a drinking game I would have had liver failure after the second hour.
he describes Terra and Terran society super well and kudos for that.
nothing was revealed, except (spoiler? is it a spoiler if it's been hinted for years?)
he may or may not be working for emps or an external force we know nothing about?
also (spoilers for real)
also also even though it takes place during the battle for Terra, there isn't a single one of the emperor's companions guarding the gate to the throne room? you know. the guys who did nothing and stayed there when the orks had a battlemoon over the imperial palace. or for most of the age of apostasy. or every time Terra is threatened?
a dark angel killing a custodes and calling someone else a traitor right after is mind boggling but about right for dark angels.
after the return of the lion I thought it might be a connection to it or perhaps more dept look into him aiding Roboute. but no- just Cypher narrating to himself like his spoof character did in Text To Speech Device on YouTube lol.

Sanguinius is the Great Angel, most beloved of all the primarchs, his mighty exploits celebrated throughout the entire Imperium as the Crusade expands into the void. And yet the origins of his Legion are shrouded in mystery and rumour, his unique physical form is an enigma, and his perilous home world remains off-limits to all but his own secretive people. When a discredited remembrancer arrives with the expeditionary fleets to chronicle the primarch’s deeds, he has to work hard to uncover the truth behind the legends.

good. but etter if not considered a primarch book.
Revisado: 05-19-23
good story I enjoyed it. but again with BL authors they write a primarch novel with only sprinkles of the primarch in it.
the story itself was enjoyable and I liked the ending but it sorta felt like the entire thing should been a secondary plot in a bigger novel that should focus on sanguinius perspective. which part of the time tables happen in other books but my point still stands.
sanguinius is one of the most important characters in the lore universe-
and much like Horus I don't think we should of had to wait until the literal end of the horus heresy and the siege of Terra just to get a real story from their perspective.
also love that Qruze made an appearance one of my fave Luna wolves.
tl dr great story just not enough sanguinius

finally a primary book about a primarch!
Revisado: 05-12-23
personal and inner thoughts of a primarch from his perspective is great. too many of the HH primarch novels have the name of a primarch but rarely from their perspective let alone any at all 'screen time'
it took some getting use to. because this Lion is so different from the HH lion, but it actually states that in the story that he himself feels different. instead of just the writer writing him differently. so major props.
enjoyed it immensely and can't wait to see the answers of soooo many questions that the novel brings up.

it's good but-
Revisado: 03-11-23
spoilers ahead
I enjoyed the story though some things felt disconnected. like how ultra zealots of the black Templars are fine with basically an AI taking over the fleet. an Eldar causing the death of so many precious lives of her kin so that 2 children who aren't even born yet can live.
or how the fleet traversed the massive halo scar without going through the warp in like ten days.
perhaps it's just nitpicking but it stuck out to me.
also Graham I love your work and this is just a personal thing, but can we use other imperial guard regiments besides cadians for once?
or a bigger thing why not use the Iron Hands in such a mechanicus themed story, I can't even remember the last time I've seen them in a recent novel.
looking forward to the hearing the other books though.
oh, also. narrator can't do space marines to save his life, and sorta sounded bored the whole time.
