Like another reviewer, I found Robert Blumfield difficult for me to understand with his French accent at the beginning. He also sounded pretentious which turned me off. But he was perfectly in character for the person in the novel and I soon forgot about any difficulty. Each segment in the novel is presented from the point of view of one of the people in the story, and the readers do a marvelous job of bringing each person to life in a unique, rich way, although my wife says the Brussels accent is not perfect. The pacing of the narration is excellent, and Chevalier's story is superb! My wife and I traveled back in our memory to our visit to Paris and the Cluny Museum as we listened, and the story brought the tapestries to life wonderfully. I wish we had heard - read the story before we went, but it is great now. My only complaint is that we listen to the story at bedtime and it wakes me up, it is so fun to hear! What a great writer and what great readers! Bravo!

A delightful Surprise

When I read some of the reviews of this book I was prepared for a mediocre listening experience, but as my wife and I listened we found the story and the performance excellent. The characters were rich, and the historical setting very interesting, and the story captivating to the very end! The reader was very animated and had different voices that seemed to fit each characters very well. I do wish I had a copy of DaVinci's Last Supper and his other paintings with me when we were listening. If you are interested in art, history, mystery or religion you will find them all alive and well here!

Happy Surprise

When we chose this book we wondered if we would enjoy it. The alcoholism that seemed to be a problem of the main character and others felt like a drawback, a grim element of the story. But as the story unfolded the author's compassion and perceptiveness stretched our hearts. Never a boring book, the story is continually alive with emotional intensity, which keeps your interest and enthusiasm, and yet at times I looked forward to a shift into a more calm mode. The humor of the author was delightful and brought a refreshing balance to the difficulties faced by the characters. We thoroughly enjoyed the story and the reading of the boook and commend it to you!

Romance and Violence

Total
3 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 08-01-07

Having enjoyed the earlier book in this duet we looked forward to this title. The book is well written, interesting historically - teaching or reviewing history while telling stories. After an ongoing romantic tale, we moved into extended descriptions of the bloodshed that is a true part of the history of Ireland. But we tired of the well-written violent struggles.
