Historia
Ernest Hemingway said, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn". One hundred years after its author’s death, this classic remains remarkably modern and poignantly relevant. In this new edition, Elijah Wood reads Huck in a youthful voice that may be the closest interpretation to Twain’s original intent. His performance captures the excitement and confusion of adolescence and adventure.

Some people will be offended because the language is offensive. That’s too bad because it is a great novel. You have to remember when it was written.

Historia
At MI5 headquarters Regent's Park, First Desk Claude Whelan is learning the rule (cover your arse) the hard way. Tasked with protecting a beleaguered prime minister, he's facing attack from all directions himself. Over at Slough House, the MI5 satellite office for outcast and demoted spies, the agents are struggling with personal problems: repressed grief, various addictions, retail paralysis, and the nagging suspicion that their newest colleague is a psychopath. Plus someone is trying to kill Roddy Ho.

Excellent author
Revisado: 09-03-23
This series is well worth reading and watching. Actually watching before you read the first book is a good idea, as you can picture Slough House and the characters making it a little more interesting.

Historia
To all appearances, Dan Chase is a harmless retiree in Vermont with two big mutts and a grown daughter he keeps in touch with by phone. But most 60-year-old widowers don't have multiple driver's licenses, savings stockpiled in banks across the country, and a bugout kit with two Beretta Nanos stashed in the spare bedroom closet. Most have not spent decades on the run.

TV show is pretty good. This book is not. It’s dull and is not worth a listen. Only didn’t stop because we were on a long drive and had nothing else.

Historia
London’s Slough House is where the washed-up MI5 spies go to while away what’s left of their careers. The “Slow Horses,” as they’re called, have all disgraced themselves in some way to get relegated here. Maybe they messed up an op badly, or got in the way of an ambitious colleague. Maybe they just got too dependent on the bottle—not unusual in this line of work. One thing these failed spies have in common, though, is they all want to be back in the action. Now the Slow Horses have a chance at redemption.

Much better than the Apple TV series
Revisado: 01-13-23
Also significantly different. Many plot points are clearly resolved, as is not quite true on Apple. And much of the plot and actions of the characters are changed on TV. A plot arch is being built into the TV series unlike the books. Well worth the time to enjoy both, if only to have the look of the characters in your head as you listen.

Enjoyed this one.
Revisado: 04-18-21
This book is almost as good as the ones in the Hard Magic series. There are books by this author that I have not found particularly interesting as I am probably one of the few that doesn’t enjoy Monster Hunters. This one is pretty good. Quick action and a fair amount of characterization. Not much on background of the characters but the action is exciting and keeps the book rolling along. I always have enjoyed this authors combination of steam punk and adventure. There’s not a wasted word. I will be getting the next book in the series.

Should have read this before
Revisado: 11-11-20
I have many Japanese and hapa friends. As a psychologist I have worked with many Japanese and part Japanese in Hawaii. I should have read this book 20 years ago. Now I understand things that either puzzled or slipped by me. Sometimes a person cannot explain themselves and I could have been better. My friends explained many things to me so I wasn’t entirely ignorant of what Jung called the collective unconscious but I could have been better.

Read the comic first
Revisado: 08-25-20
The execution of this collection of stories, with multiple actors, is well done. Most of the stories are interesting. But, if you haven't read ay least some of the comics the "mental picture" that should accompany the narrative is lacking, reducing enjoyment.
Neil Gaiman is a fine writer. Neverwhere and American Gods are a good place to start. Having drawings to use as background rather than descriptive writing delutes his skill at creating an alternative reality.
Not bad but not his best.

First book...series gets a lot better
Revisado: 04-12-20
In 2020 this book and it's technology are quite dated, so any born after 1975 won't get it. The series gets much better as Crais develops Cole's LA world. The most recent books featuring Joe Pike are really good and so are the several spinoffs about characters introduced in the Cole series (one or two are top notch).
Admittedly it's Spencer and Hawk outwest, even using a few of the plot points in the first Spencer book. The first five or so of the Spencer novels are hard to beat, as Parker was a master until he and his successors started churning them out for the money, so Crais not being as good as Parker is setting a pretty high bar.
Elvis isn't as funny as Spencer, but like the books, he gets better. The cat stays about the same. Listen to the series in order and you'll be pleased with with the improvement and the time spent.

Historia
Listen, having kids is great, my little Gigi Collins and Pete’s daughter Hannah are sweet little fluffs of cotton candy, spun from the silk of fairy spiders who live in the clouds. But man, can they cause trouble. Seriously, you’d think a two-year-old couldn’t possibly threaten the very existence of our physical reality, but, well, you know where this is going. So join me and Pete, and Bobo, and of course the man himself, Nikola Tesla, on another spine-tingling, bowel-loosening thrill ride, and remember: bring your adult diapers.

Historia
The blonde who walked into Cole’s office was the best looking woman he’d seen in weeks. The only thing that kept her from rating a perfect "10" was the briefcase on one arm and the uptight hotel magnate on the other. Bradley Warren had lost something very valuable - something that belonged to someone else: a rare thirteenth-century Japanese manuscript called the Hagakure. Just about all Cole knew about Japanese culture he’d learned from reading Shogun, but he knew a lot about crooks - and what he didn’t know his sociopathic sidekick, Joe Pike, did.

Dated. Irritating reader. Buy a Luke Daniels read
Revisado: 08-14-18
It's, of course, Spencer and Hawk in LA, but that's a good thing. I enjoy these books, as they are as good as the early to mid-series Spencer novels, before Mr. Parker started just cranking them out yearly. But this one is too old for 2018, actually implies that Elvis wouldn't understand about Asian crime, and has a reader that makes the "jokes" sound like a high school kid. Robert Crais is a good writer. The whole Joe Pike series is outstanding, as are the single character books about Carol Starkey and Scott James, for example. Start the series later, like with Voodoo River, and enjoy!
