If you want to understand the world today and the world of the last 50 years, this is your chance to get a download of Noam Chomsky's incredible wealth of knowledge and Vijay Prashad's insights. I'm wiser, and angrier, for having read this book.

I liked it well enough, though it seemed unnecessarily long. I'm not a gamer but am interested enough in gaming culture to enjoy the game descriptions which are creative. I bet many wished these games exist. The characters are pretty interesting but they seem to over complicate things. I didn't understand why people portrayed as practically soul mates can't just be friends.

A good story which brings up important questions of abuse, violence, adolescence and the power of social media, all while providing a nice flash back for those of us who were also teens in the 90s. Keeps a good pace, is never slow. Recommended.

A calming story, with a unique premise, and a charming, likeable protagonists. I will revisit this book. The narration is very good, completely suitable.

Classic Michael Connolly story, entertaining with its twists and turns.
But I really wish they would not do the double narration. So weird to have one voice for Haller and another for Bosch and then just Haller's voice for all the other characters. The intensisy of the primary narrator's voice, his insistence on punctuating every single word, is quite annoying.

The book was interesting enough, but I would have returned it had I been able to.
It's very dreamlike, and the novel inside the novel, which the unnamed protagonist is writing, is even harder to grasp.
I think I would have enjoyed it a lot if the motivation for the disappearances and the Memory Police had been explained.

When the book ended I was taken by surprise as I really still thought the story was just starting. It's interesting, with some well developed characters and a very intriguing premise, but I wanted more. I was certainly never bored! I wanted twice this book.

Among the many, many challenges that plague America, the massive and deeply unfair imprisonment of such large parts of the population, in particular black men, may be one of the saddest, most racist.

In this book, I learned about the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution which abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime. It became big business to imprison people, especially black men of course, which is part of the reason so many of them are in jail today. A history of racism, violence and demonisation of them as violent criminals even though they're in jail more minor crimes or are innocent.

Second, I learned that only a small percentage of prisoners have been convicted in a trial. Most are there with plea deals. This includes many many innocent people who have been told they'll have no chance in a trial. In addition, many innocent people refuse plea deals, assuming they'll go free, because they're innocent, but then get harsher sentences than the plea deal. This scares others into taking deals.

Third, I learned prisoners (at least in the Jersey jail in this book) get 15 minutes to visit a dying relative or see a deseased relative in a funeral home, with no other family present. They are accompanied by a guard, of course, and have to pay the overtime of that guard, which can be hundreds of dollars. I learned a lot more than that of course.

Please read. Also, please look up other works by Chris Hedges, in books, online newspapers, on YouTube and his podcast.

Great to revisit Mandel's universe again, and as is usual for her, re-meet some characters from other books. It's sn interesting and surprising story, which came together nicely at the end. I only wish it had been longer, with a couple more stories woven in, so we can see even more of Mandel's universe.

Some of her considerations, or the things her characters deal with, are very timely. Some of the pandemic and lockdown research probably did itself (don't worry, it's not covid-19).
I’m reading a novel that was written during the pandemic and I think a lot of the author’s research kind of did itself.

In the wake of a pandemic in the book (part of which is set in the far future), they’re discussing why there has been increased interest in post-apocalyptic literature. The protagonist suggest it is because in light of all the economic inequality in the world (also in this future scenario where people live in space colonies in addition to on Earth), that it’s about a chance to “blow everything up and start over”. Here I felt the book put into words some intriguing thoughts. After all, we also live in a highly unequal and increasingly volatile world.

This was both educational and surprisingly entertaining. I'll listen to this again, for sure.
