A Classic Thriller
Revisado: 05-02-23
I read my first Fu Manchu novel when I was looking for light fiction after learning that Ian Fleming the author of the James Bond novels collected these novels as a young person. After reading the first book in the series I was hooked. This would have been in the 1980's. I read all of the remaining Fu Manchu novels in the order of their publication. I re-read all of these again and in order at a later date. My life has become much busier since that time and thanks to my Audible membership I can still read both light and serious literature while engaged in tasks that do not require my undivided attention. My great frustration is that only the first three titles had been released at that time as audiobooks on Audible. These were read by John Bolen. The reader of this series B.J. Harrison is also an excellent choice.
I thoroughly enjoyed this title and cannot wait to purchase the remaining books in this series as soon as they are released.

In this monumental and provocative history, Patrick Buchanan makes the case that, if not for the blunders of British statesmen - Winston Churchill first among them - the horrors of two world wars and the Holocaust might have been avoided and the British Empire might never have collapsed into ruins.

A Must Read
Revisado: 01-04-20
This book is one I will read again. It is rich with the history I was never taught in public schools. Buchanan is to be lauded for his scholarship and in-depth analysis. This book helped me to understand both World Wars and Germany's actions in them. Please do not take this to be a whitewashing of Nazi Germany's warcrimes though. The last chapter shows the direction in which this nation is rushing headlong. If you are a serious student of history or politics you will find this an informative read. I sincerely believe you will consider this money or a credit well spent.

Government is composed of wise public servants who innocently pursue the common good! In Real Dissent, Tom Woods demolishes some of the toughest critics of libertarianism in his trademark way.

I started this book then put it down for awhile. What I can say is that Part IX did an excellent job of answering many objections to the principles of libertarianism. If you believe in the non-aggression principle and in personal freedom you should read this book. It is on my re-read list.

Historia
Wilhelm Canaris was appointed by Hitler to head the Abwehr (the German secret service) 18 months after the Nazis came to power. But Canaris turned against the Fuhrer and the Nazi regime, believing that Hitler would start a war Germany could not win. In 1938 he was involved in an attempted coup, undermined by British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. In 1940 he sabotaged the German plan to invade England, and fed General Franco vital information that helped him keep Spain out of the war.

A Brilliant Man Doing Good While Surrounded By Evil
Revisado: 04-19-19
I first heard about Wilhelm Canaris from a friend in college. He described him a the equivalent of a puppeteer or someone who plays 3-D chess. What impressed me about this history was Canaris’ high moral character, great mind and willingness to do the right thing even when it could cause him to be tortured and/or lose his life.

Historia
The first book of D Day Through German Eyes has fascinated listeners around the world with its insight into the German experience of June 6, 1944. Now, book 2 contains a completely different set of astonishing German testimonies from the same archive. These newly translated eyewitness statements by German veterans show the defenders to be determined but psychologically insecure, often deluded in their thinking, and all too human in their shock at the onslaught they faced.

As Good as the First Book if Not Better
Revisado: 03-22-19
I enjoyed this book as much if not more than the first book. The most interesting part was the last interview with K.L. Bergmann whoo was a special weapons officer in which he described the German Typhoon wonder weapon. I also found Niklaus Lange's comments on the British very interesting.

Historia
Almost all accounts of D-Day are told from the Allied perspective, with the emphasis on how German resistance was overcome on June 6, 1944. But what was it like to be a German soldier in the bunkers and gun emplacements of the Normandy coast, facing the onslaught of the mightiest seaborne invasion in history? What motivated the German defenders, what were their thought processes - and how did they fight from one strong point to another, among the dunes and fields, on that first cataclysmic day?

The Rest of the Story
Revisado: 03-13-19
I was born 11 years after the ending of hostilities in Europe. I think it is fair to say that there were still lingering beliefs that most Germans supported the atrocities committed by Nazi party fanatics, like the Schutzstaffel or SS. What I appreciate after listening to these interviews is how many soldiers of the Wehrmacht were very thoughtful, intelligent and compassionate men. I also learned that the Allies were not perfect either in the way they conducted war. One example of this is an Allied plane which shot up an ambulance that was clearly marked as such, not only killing the soldiers and wounded but two nurses as well. This book gave me a new appreciation for the soldiers of the Wehrmacht who believed they were among other things protecting Europe from Soviet Communism. I would highly recommend this honest, informative and entertaining book.

Historia
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

A Well Written Book About a Dark Subject
Revisado: 03-02-19
I have to compliment Bryan Burrough for his telling of this story. He strikes a pleasant balance between an unnecessarily long winded recitation and its’ antithesis ‘just the facts please’ telling of a story. Burrough’s like old movies avoids making this story more gruesome than is necessary to depict events. I have now added one of his books to my Audible wish list.
As a displaced Texan and Presbyterian this book was of particular interest. I can say after having been involved in unpleasant church politics the church’s machinations do not surprise me, which are not an indictment of Christianity or Presbyterian theology. I will not comment on the actions of various Texas law enforcement officers as there are really not enough facts presented in this difficult case.

Historia
On June 6, 1944, 150,000 Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy and suffered an astonishingly low rate of casualties. A stunning military achievement, it was also a masterpiece of trickery. Operation Fortitude, which protected and enabled the invasion, and the Double Cross system, which specialized in turning German spies into double agents, tricked the Nazis into believing that the Allied attacks would come in Calais and Norway rather than Normandy.

Transfer
I’ve long believed one does not truly know history unless they are aware of the behind the scene machinations of governments and their intelligence services. In this book Ben Macintyre tells the story of the five spies who formed Double Cross's nucleus. They were, to say the least, a colorful group. This is the third book I have read by Ben Macintyre and like the other two I have read is excellent. One thing I especially appreciate is that Macintyre gives short biographies of these spies following WWII. If you like history and especially the history of WWII and espionage I believe that you will agree with me that this is an excellent book. I am glad that I did not listen to the one and two star reviews of this book which confirm my experience that so often these reviews are more a reflection of the reviewer than the item reviewed.

Historia
Eddie Chapman was a charming criminal, a con man, and a philanderer. He was also one of the most remarkable double agents Britain has ever produced. Inside the traitor was a man of loyalty; inside the villain was a hero. The problem for Chapman, his spymasters, and his lovers was to know where one persona ended and the other began.

A Great Story About a Complex Man
Revisado: 02-12-19
This is the second book I have read by Ben MacIntyre, the first being Rogue Heroes: The History of the SAS, Britain's Secret Special Forces Unit That Sabotaged the Nazis and Changed the Nature of War which is also available as an Audible audiobook. I had read a similar book but found MacIntyre's book worth the read. Ben MacIntyre has a way of relating history that I really appreciate. I like his writing style so much that I have just purchased his book, Double Cross: The True Story of the D-Day Spies and will read The Spy and the Traitor: The Greatest Espionage Story of the Cold War after finishing Double Cross.
Agent Zigzag, whose real name was Eddie Chapman was a man with immense abilities. WWII enabled him to put those abilities to use for a good cause. I think that anyone who enjoys books about interesting people, history, WWII and/or espionage will thoroughly enjoy this book.

Every leader must be ready and willing to take charge, to make hard, crucial calls for the good of the team and the mission. Something much more difficult to understand is that in order to be a good leader, one must also be a good follower. This is a dichotomy - a Dichotomy of Leadership. It is, as authors Jocko Willink and Leif Babin explained in their best-selling first audiobook, Extreme Ownership, “Simple, Not Easy”.

A Perfect Compliment to Extreme Ownership
Revisado: 02-07-19
I was a little hesitant about purchasing this book as it is not uncommon for authors in this genre to write a rehash of their first successful book. Not so with The Dichotomy of Leadership. Jocko and Leif delve into the finer distinctions that keep one from misapplying the principles taught in his first book. I appreciated both books so much that I purchased the Kindle versions of both books. I will re-read both books multiple times. This book is at least as good as their first book if not better.
