wow!!
Revisado: 02-14-25
I was not fully impressed with book one. I wanted more and I hated the ending. with that said, you can truly see how much the author has grown as a writer in book 2. I was fully invested. Loved multiple characters and was deeply hurt by the loss of more than one of them. I'm excited to see/read future titles by the author while watching her creative writing skills flow, grow and shift.
This book alone makes the first book worth it all!!

Historia
To the outside world, they seem to have it all. Cassie Barrett, a renowned anthropologist, and Alex Rivers, one of Hollywood's hottest actors, met on the set of a motion picture in Africa. They shared childhood tales, toasted the future, and declared their love in a fairy-tale wedding. But when they return to California, something alters the picture of their perfect marriage. A frightening pattern is taking shape - a cycle of hurt, denial, and promises, thinly veiled by glamour.

look at the mind of a battered woman
Revisado: 02-10-25
I would like to first acknowledge the story. The thought process of a battered woman. It gives an invite into why women stay with abusive partners. Why they think they can change them. It was an interesting read and left me with a different perspective of these women. They are all SO brave!
The narration was horrible. Slow and mondaine. I struggled to get through it. I found speeding it up some helped but I'd say just read the physical book on this one.
Jodi is one of my favorite authors and typically I learn a lot from her books. Not just from the story itself. From the background knowledge she learns when studying her character's jobs.
I will say this was my least favorite of her books but that's because she has so many absolutely amazing ones that stick with you for a long time after.

3.5 stars but that's not an option.

The story kept me engaged and guessing. some slight twist but imo the ending was predictable. would I recommend this to a friend.. probably not in all honesty. Do I regret giving it my time? not at all.

Since she was nine years old, Alina Dziak knew she would marry her best friend, Tomasz. Historia
In a tale inspired by real events, pregnant journalist Joan Harken is cautiously excited to follow her fiancé back to his Minnesota hometown. After spending a childhood on the move and chasing the screams and swirls of news-rich city life, she’s eager to settle down. Lilydale’s motto, “Come Home Forever,” couldn’t be more inviting. And yet, something is off in the picture-perfect village. The friendliness borders on intrusive. Joan can’t shake the feeling that every move she makes is being tracked. An archaic organization still seems to hold the town in thrall.

Historia
Mary B. Addison killed a baby. Allegedly. She didn't say much in that first interview with detectives, and the media filled in the only blanks that mattered: a white baby had died while under the care of a churchgoing black woman and her nine-year-old daughter. The public convicted Mary, and the jury made it official. But did she do it?

8/10 worth the credit if you like a drama mystery
Revisado: 06-25-23
The narrator fell flat of emotion performance in quite a few places. Even with that, her voice and deliverance was still tolerable. I'm quick to put a book down when a narrator doesn't land the part.
The story itself was surprisingly better than I expected. Lots of twists and turns that were not as predictable as I thought they would be. This was my first book by Tarryn and I'm intrigued to read more of her writing after this book.

a tough one to digest
Revisado: 02-23-23
this story was heart breaking at times and sometimes very hard to digest. I had to take multiple breaks to help with the intense anger or sadness it would bring on. Brook is a very strong human to have survived and thrived through it all. an intense but highly recommend read
