Historia
On an ordinary Monday morning, Ariel Cafferty's phone buzzes with a disturbing text message. Something’s happened. I need to see you. Meet me under the candelabra tree ASAP. The words would be jarring from anyone, but the sender is the only man she ever loved. And it's been several years since she learned he died. Seeing Drew’s name pop up is heart-stopping. Ariel’s gut says it can’t be real. But she goes to the tree anyway. She has to. Nobody shows.

Historia
On a flight from London to Boston, Ted Severson meets the stunning and mysterious Lily Kintner. Sharing one too many martinis, the strangers begin to play a game of truth, revealing intimate details about themselves. Ted talks about his marriage that’s going stale and his wife, Miranda, who he’s sure is cheating on him. Ted and his wife were a mismatch from the start - he the rich businessman, she the artistic free spirit - a contrast that once inflamed their passion but has now become a cliché. But their game turns a little darker when Ted jokes that he could kill Miranda....

Profoundly unlikable characters
Revisado: 07-07-24
I’ve tried to get through this book twice. The plot itself is good, but the characters are so unlikable. I agree with another reviewer who said the women are clearly written by a man as male fantasies. One of them is devastated by the death of a man who is such a horrible misogynist, it’s mystifying that any woman would want to be around him. And we are supposed to think of him as the victim. I just could not get through this book, much though I tried.

A boring slog
Revisado: 06-15-24
Ruth Ware is my favorite author. I automatically pre-order all her books without even reading the description, and I’m never disappointed. Until this one. I just could not get through it. It’s such a departure from her usual style, and for me, it wasn’t successful. It’s kind of a techno-thriller with only 1 character for the majority of the book, and the story just isn’t that compelling.
I’m happy to say that her book after this one, One Perfect Couple, is a return to her normal style and I loved it. Skip this one.

Compelling but confusing
Revisado: 07-12-22
I really enjoy Denise Mina’s books. Her characters and writing are extremely compelling. But like Conviction, the previous book in this series, the plot is hard to keep track of. By the end, I only had a very general idea of how all the threads interconnected. I think this makes any twists and denouements less impactful, because I can’t really tell what’s going on!
I listed to Conviction again before listening to Confidence, and a lot of reviewers had the same experience as me. There were too many characters, too many stray plot threads and not enough to tie it all together. I do wonder if the book might not lend itself to audio? The narrator is wonderful, though.
Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll be buying the next book in this series, if there is one, because I’m just so lost by the end I can barely manage to finish it.

Good, but drags on at the end
Revisado: 03-01-20
I enjoyed this book, particularly at the beginning. However, the last 3-4 hours drag on and become unnecessarily complicated. I think it could have wrapped up much more quickly and cleanly, but instead got bogged down unnecessary explanations and details. I kept checking to see how much time was left. That said, I enjoyed the first 2/3 and I don’t regret spending a credit on it.

Predictable, nothing special
Revisado: 03-23-17
This book wasn't bad, but I found it to be quite predictable. It didn't wow me at all. The characters weren't very interesting and mostly one dimensional. I also felt like I was supposed to start empathizing with one of the characters who was responsible for the missing baby, and I absolutely did not. The character's thoughts seemed really laughable, as if s/he had no awareness of how narcissistic and self-justifying s/he was. I couldn't tell if the author intended that and I was supposed to hate the character or if it was lazy writing.
In short, I was not impressed by this book.

Revisado: 07-30-15
A Tana French classic. Totally absorbing, firmly anchored in the milieu she has created. The language of the young girls in this book seems jarring at first but it quickly becomes fascinating in its own right. I really loved this book. Couldn't stop listening.

Historia
Carl Mørck used to be one of Denmark’s best homicide detectives. Then a hail of bullets destroyed the lives of two fellow cops, and Carl - who didn’t draw his weapon - blames himself. So a promotion is the last thing he expects. But Department Q is a department of one, and Carl’s got only a stack of cold cases for company. His colleagues snicker, but Carl may have the last laugh, because one file keeps nagging at him: A liberal politician vanished five years earlier and is presumed dead. But she isn’t dead...yet.
