Historia
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

A great book needs a better narrator.
Revisado: 07-14-24
While not quite to the high standards the author reached with his volumes on Washington, and of course Hamilton, still highly recommend this volume on one of the less understood giants of American history. Unfortunately, the narration does a terrible disservice by often overdramatic tones, and adapting accents that range from silly to down right offensive.

Historia
The Roman empire shaped the culture of the Western world against which all other great powers are compared. Stretching from the north of Britain to the Sahara, and from the Atlantic coast to the Euphrates, it imposed peace and prosperity on an unprecedented scale. However, the exception lay in the east, where the Parthian and then Persian empires ruled over great cities and the trade routes to mysterious lands beyond. This was the place Alexander the Great had swept through, creating a dream of glory and conquest which tantalized Greeks and Romans alike.

Somewhat interesting read, but author’s expertise and focus is on the Roman side. His knowledge of Iranian history, even when it comes to basic geography is frustrating.

Even to a dedicated Bond fan, very little to recommend this volume. Difficult to read the absolutely vicious racism.

Historia
Based largely on documents declassified in only the last few years, One Man Against the World paints a devastating portrait of a tortured yet brilliant man who led the country largely according to a deep-seated insecurity and distrust of not only his cabinet and Congress but the American population at large. In riveting, tick-tock prose, Weiner illuminates how the Vietnam War and the Watergate controversy that brought about Nixon's demise were inextricably linked.

A worthy listen, if a bit sensationalized.
Revisado: 06-20-15
Very interesting material, only recently declassified, is presented about the Nixon presidency; although almost exclusively focused on Watergate than anything else.
Narration is good, minus the cheesy Nixon impression, and rather poor accents. Not sure why increasing number of narrators feel the need to be so, "hammy" when a straight reading would do.

A wonderful book. Funny, poignant, informative, and rather sad in parts.
Really great narrator, only complaint is his insistence on doing a rather extreme accent for every person. His impressions of the Fab 4 are great, but really don't need these thick, exaggerated voices for the Germans, Americans, etc...
Cannot wait for volume 2!

In its final report, the 9/11 Commission famously called the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia "a problematic ally in combating Islamic extremism". To Gerald Posner, the best-selling author of Why America Slept: The Failure to Prevent 9/11, this is a gross understatement.

Winner Take All is about the commodity dynamics that the world will face over the next several decades. In particular, it is about the implications of China’s rush for resources across all regions of the world. The scale of China’s resource campaign for hard commodities (metals and minerals) and soft commodities (timber and food) is among the largest in history.

This is a very timely and interesting read. Unfortunately, this is doubtless the worst narrator for an audiobook I've ever come across. Do your ears a favor, but the book.
