Surprisingly enjoyable for such a quick read. Fast-paced and not too ridiculously far-fetched. 3 stars rounded up to 4 for the audio performances.

Disappointing
Revisado: 03-11-24
I've read some very enjoyable books by Kiersten Modglin; unfortunately, this was not one of them.
It was a fast story that dragged interminably despite an audio performance so breathlessly intense that it gave me anxiety. The portrayal of the vapid book bloggers was annoying and tiresome. Most of the characters were one-dimensional, and their dialogue reflected that.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Suspend disbelief, (along with a few eye rolls) and go along the unnerving ride that Nina Manning creates. The entire time I listened I kept thinking, this would make a great movie. Solid 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4 on the Audible version.

Caught in the murderous web of the monster she called her father, Sharon wasn’t her real name. This sequel delivers
Revisado: 07-12-22
This sequel delivered on all that was yet unknown at the end of its prequel, A Beautiful Child.
Despite having read the first book and viewing various research on the case, the multilayers of deception surrounding Suzanne’s life are still difficult to comprehend.
Matt Birkbeck successfully treads a fine journalistic line again. Bringing dark facts to the light for further examination, but never veering into sensationalism or judgment, even when it would be far simpler to do so. He weaves together the many, many lives Suzanne touched, and the final pages honor her life and memory in a way that brought tears to my eyes.

A twisted, convoluted and tragic true story
Revisado: 07-01-22
After watching Danielle Kirsty cover this case on YouTube, I went down the rabbit hole in search of information. Since she cited this book as a reference source, you can imagine my eagerness to obtain the audio version the very same day it dropped. Unfortunately, the excitement ended there.
In its simplest terms, this case is twisted, convoluted and confusing. However, that is no fault of the author. The writing of this book, originally published in 2004 cannot possibly cover the case to a satisfactory end, due to facts still being unknown at the time of the writing. If you know nothing of the case, this could be a solid starting ground, but be warned, there is a lot of unnecessary detail and information related to bit players in the story. Fortunately, the author followed up with a sequel titled “Finding Sharon” which is supposed to provide closure to the case as it continued to develop over the next ten years. I’m off to read it right now.
Ultimately, this book did serve a valuable purpose. It brought Suzanne’s story to the attention of the world, helped the CIA solve the case and honored the life she may have lived, were it not been robbed from her.

The capture of a Dragon King is cause for celebration. Jeyra never dreamed she would actually face one of the creatures who destroyed her home. But the longer she’s around him, the more she finds herself gravitating to him. All it takes is one reckless kiss that unleashes desires and the truth that has been hidden from her to set them both on a course that could be the end of them.

Please get a new narrator
Revisado: 07-19-21
After endless explanations and meandering to set up the plot, the storyline itself did not really take off until the last 1/3 of the book. Although it picked up, it wasn't enough to save it for me. Overall, very disappointing. Take note: the Audible version had one of the worst male narrations I've ever heard for a woman's voice. The lead character sounded like the Lucky Charms leprechaun. Not sexy.
