Historia
Malintzin was the indigenous woman who translated for Hernando Cortes in his dealings with the Aztec emperor Moctezuma in the days of 1519 to 1521. The Spanish called her doña Marina, and she has become known to posterity as La Malinche. As Malinche, she has long been regarded as a traitor to her people, a dangerously sexy, scheming woman who gave Cortes whatever he wanted out of her own self-interest. The life of the real woman, however, was much more complicated.

Insightful and fascinating
Revisado: 01-02-25
This eye opening story was riveting and beyond informative. It explains in clear and understandable terms what actually happened before, during, and after the conquest of Mexico. The author provides logical explanations for the myths that become the history I was taught. She also provides plausible theories for the mostly likely correct story that we can never know completely.
I am also reading her book “Fifth Sun” that is an expansion on this amazing part of history.

I wish I had listened to this one first.
Revisado: 12-25-23
I listened to the Wager, Killers, and then Z. The writing improved with each book. I wish I had reversed the order. This book was occasionally difficult to follow as it skipped from the author’s story to Fawcett’s and even other explorers. The time jumps were not always clear. The story was fascinating but at times overly detailed. I was most taken by the author’s journey and wish more of the book was devoted to that. Overall a great story.

Historia
Elsie Bovary is a cow, and a pretty happy one at that—her long, lazy days are spent eating, napping, and chatting with her best friend, Mallory. One night, Elsie and Mallory sneak out of their pasture; but while Mallory is interested in flirting with the neighboring bulls, Elsie finds herself drawn to the farmhouse. Through the window, she sees the farmer's family gathered around a bright Box God—and what the Box God reveals about something called an "industrial meat farm" shakes Elsie's understanding of her world to its core.

Historia
From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.

Historia
In the tornado that was downtown New York in the 1980s, John Lurie stood at the vortex. After founding the band The Lounge Lizards with his brother, Evan, in 1979, Lurie quickly became a centrifugal figure in the world of outsider artists, cutting-edge filmmakers, and cultural rebels. Now Lurie vibrantly brings to life the whole wash of 1980s New York as he developed his artistic soul over the course of the decade and came into orbit with all the prominent artists of that time and place.

Smedley Butler was the most celebrated warfighter of his time. Best-selling books were written about him. Hollywood adored him. Wherever the flag went, “The Fighting Quaker” went - serving in nearly every major overseas conflict from the Spanish War of 1898 until the eve of World War II.

Shocking but not surprising
Revisado: 05-23-22
The connections are endless. The ties from our past to today are illuminated with remarkable clarity. No one comes out of this telling clean. The book is a wild ride and shows how deep the rot goes. I did not expect the direct ties to events in our very recent past. This is an important book.

Like a Christmas Carol
Revisado: 01-18-22
This book was something like Dickens Christmas Carol. The stories of other civil wars was like the ghosts of Christmas past. The current state of the US is like Christmas present. The terrible future that is predicted can also be averted if the warning signs are heeded. This book was very interesting, informative, and surprisingly hopeful.

Historia
From Lewis and Clark's 1804 expedition to the 2014 uprising in Ferguson, American history has been made in St. Louis. And as Walter Johnson shows in this searing book, the city exemplifies how imperialism, racism, and capitalism have persistently entwined to corrupt the nation's past. St. Louis was a staging post for Indian removal and imperial expansion, and its wealth grew on the backs of its poor Black residents, from slavery through redlining and urban renewal.

Historia
The New York Times Magazine’s award-winning “1619 Project” issue reframed our understanding of American history by placing slavery and its continuing legacy at the center of our national narrative. This new book substantially expands on that work, weaving together 18 essays that explore the legacy of slavery in present-day America with 36 poems and works of fiction that illuminate key moments of oppression, struggle, and resistance.

Why people that identify as white fear this book.
Revisado: 12-31-21
In 1865, field order 15 (40 acres and a mule) was rescinded. The land, taken from conquered traitors and given to the people that had produced the wealth from that land was given back to their oppressors.
Between 1868 and 1934, 246 million acres were given to native born and foreign white people in 160 acre plots. 1.5 million families received these plots. 46 million people in America trace their roots to this government hand out.
This is one of the multitude of facts that expose the lie of individual effort and hard work as the reason for the racial disparity in America.
This was a remarkable achievement in writing and in truth telling. I am changed by it.

Graceland
Revisado: 12-11-21
I convinced my father to stop at Graceland on a trip from Texas to Michigan in 1998 because there is some part of us that wants to see Graceland. I had known that since the first time I heard Paul sing it in 1986. This was the first audio book that I finished the day I downloaded it. I cried twice. Paul Simon has been a part of my life and families life for as long as I can remember and Malcolm Gladwell did an amazing job explaining why. I can not imagine a better companion on a roadtrip than this audiobook, especially if you are heading to Graceland.
