Among the fifty hand-picked soldiers aboard the HDFS Miyari, Marco Emery was on his way to the Nightwall Outpost, a space station on the front lines of the war with the Scum. They will train to fight alongside the Latona Company, a unit of the legendary Erebus Brigade - an elite fighting force in the Space Territorial Command. Under the command of Lt. Einav Ben-Ari and Sergeant Singh, the new Ravens Platoon also included Addy, Lailani, Elvis, Beast and Corporal Diaz from the training class at Fort Djemila.
The Latona Company is commanded by Captain Coleen Petty. After a dreadful first meeting, Addy dubbed her Captain Chihuahua. Their new uniforms awaiting them at the Outpost, the Ravens still wore their ratty old green fatigues, looking like second class soldiers next to the elite of the Erebus Brigade. And to pile on the pain for Marco, a couple hours before their hyperspace drive is fired a shuttle arrives delivering Cadet Kemi Abasi. She's managed to get assigned to shadow Lt. Ben-Ari in the field. Now Marco has to deal with both Lailani and Kemi. Add to the mix an android named Osiris, and we're ready for a disastrous trip.
Under way in hyperspace a distress call is received from the Corpus Mining Colony, they drop out of warpspace to investigate. What follows is some of the best battle drama and action I've ever had the privilege of reading. Love and death mix with mayhem and mystery as the Ravens fight to survive against a new type of Scum. The action is fast and furious. This is one terrific story and I cannot wait to read more!

The Skelkrins, alpha predators of the Milky Way galaxy, are pursuing a young Pirilian girl who holds the key to conquering the galaxy. The 8 foot tall, crimson skinned beasts had held Midnight in one of their prisons while they tortured and studied her, trying to find how to use her ability to teleport herself anywhere she could see to power their spacecraft. Midnight was helped to escape by an old human man with a long white beard. Aminor, also called the Traveller or the Wizard, had set her on her way to Earth, telling her to find his son Riff Starfire.
Riff Starfire, blues player extraordinaire (he thinks), is in the middle of his set at the Blues Strings club when the men who killed his mother walked in the door. The Cosmians, humans who worship the skelkrins, led by Grotter, half man and half machine, whose mechanical claw had crushed the life from his mother thirty years earlier, dragged Riff off the stage.
And so begins an exciting and hilariously entertaining adventure with Riff, his brother Steel, the love of his life Nova, and the crew of Riff's newly acquired starship the HMS Dragon Huntress. The innovative writing style and whimsical interactions between the characters brought this story an excellent mix of page-burning action and bursts of unexpected humor. I literally couldn't drag myself away from the story until I finished. I just bought the rest of this trilogy, and I can't wait to continue the adventure.

The war for Earth's future continues

The gloves are off, and the Human Defense Force prepares an all-out invasion of the Scum homeworld, Abaddon. Leading the attack and tasked with killing the Scum emperor are Corporals Marco Emery, Addy Linden and Lailani Marita de la Rosa. The platoon is again commanded by Lt. Einav Ben-Ari who has filled squads with STC veterans of Scum attacks and hive invasions, Sergeants all.
The planning, preparation and training for the mass attack against Abaddon take place on the rogue planet, Nightwall, headquarters of the Space Territorial Command. As the fleet assembles, hundreds of thousands of spacecraft, from the L16 Fighting Firebirds to massive battleships and transports, carrying millions of combined HDF and STC troops, prepare to battle against hundreds of millions of Scum in the air and on the ground of Abaddon. Oh, and add in one Lt. Kemi Abasi flying one of the Firebirds.
The gripping combat action, the fantastic, exotic sceneries and the richly believable characters continue to the depth that only Daniel Arensen can provide. This third saga in the Earth Rise series is the best so far. I've fallen in love with the characters, especially Addy with all her bravado and aggression, masking the frightened child who watched her parents die, eaten by Scum. The training and combat descriptions are thorough and frankly terrifying, so well written that I laugh, cry, ache and bleed along with Marco, Addy and Lailani.
I can highly recommend this book to all, especially lovers of sci-fi action. I know you'll enjoy the book and the series as much as I did! And now the hard part - waiting for the next book in the Earthrise series, Earth Fire.

50 years of war, death, destruction and despair

Revisado: 11-26-16

It's been 50 years since the Cataclysm, since humanity's first contact with an alien race, since scolopendra titaniae - the scum from space - had slaughtered sixty percent of the world's population and plunged mankind into this war. The scum had ravaged the world in a massive assault, bombing and gassing city after city, wiping out billions - a year of death, of inferno, of humanity hurtling towards extinction.

Humanity had scrambled, bonded together, and launched their own warships into space. Ship after ship had perished until one intrepid pilot, the hero Evan Bryan, had launched a nuclear bomb against the scum homeworld, slaying millions of centipedes. The Cataclysm had ended that day. Humanity had emerged from the flames stronger, a civilization with the power to ravage distant worlds, to face enemies in the depths of space and defeat them. That day the genocide had ended and the long War of Attrition had begun.

The HDF, the Human Defense Force, the global military created to fight the scrum, was the gauntlet all humans from every last corner of this ravaged earth entered at eighteen, then spent five years in the fire. Marco Emery lived with his father above the library where his father worked. Addy Linden had lived with them since the day seven years before when she had saved Marco's life, pulling him away from the scum that killed his mother and Addy's parents. The scrawny eleven-year-old had grown into a tall wild woman.

This terrific tale, first of the Earth Rise series, continues to delight with Addy and Marko in basic training, taking me back to memories of the excitement and terror of my own basic training. The rich and colorful descriptions of the characters bring them and their stories to life. Great characters spring from the pages, providing emotional and exciting action. I can't wait for the next installment of this tale!
