Amazingly useful book with a great and seamless reading
Revisado: 09-17-24
The book is amazingly useful with lots of information regarding the underlying structure of the ACT framework and how it is meant to be used and improve your well-being.
While I loved the content and personally have been recommended this book by my therapist I gotta admit, the book is so filled with practices and "exercises" that need your full attention that it might get annoying at times (since you often have to pause it to wait for the time to focus on them).
Also while those exercises are very useful, they might seem funny, evident or even silly. I, as Russ, would advise the listener/reader to do them as described without skipping. At least try them, most of the times they do have a small impact and you start to understand the logic behind them (even if they seem irrelevant); even when they seem to be useless, at least you can find some fun in having done them, and maybe that's a way to tell the "reason-giving machine" that not everything has to be done for productivity and sometimes silly stuff is fun.

Plato was the first great philosopher of the West to organize and record the issues and questions that define philosophy. A student of Socrates, Plato preserved the teachings of his mentor in many famous "dialogues" that deal with classic issues like law and justice, perception and reality, death and the soul, mind and body, reason and passion, and the nature of love.

A short overview of Plato's work
Revisado: 12-26-22
As it should be noted, this work mentions and talks about Socrates just as much (maybe even more) as Plato. I would not consider it a defect of the book, it makes sense especially since Plato and Socrates are hard to distinguish from what is left.
Overall the content is short but "good enough" it presents the main topics and skips any in-depth analysis that would make it a complete philosophical book (which is to say that it's good for what it is, a short sneak peak into Plato's world and thought)

Amazing content and delivery
Revisado: 12-15-22
Great content and enjoyable experience, the book starts off in a more "documentary" fashion, full of explanations and clarifications (that are definitely mixed with fun stories and examples, to help with it becoming a great learning experience). Later, the book focuses more and more into the practical side of things, building on the concepts explained and offering life tips and helpful tips for a healthier brain development and aging.
Definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in both self-improvement and the biology behind human behavior.
Thanks for the awesome content!

Historia
One of the great fears many of us face is that despite all our effort and striving, we will discover at the end that we have wasted our life. In A Guide to the Good Life, William B. Irvine plumbs the wisdom of Stoic philosophy, one of the most popular and successful schools of thought in ancient Rome, and shows how its insight and advice are still remarkably applicable to modern lives. In A Guide to the Good Life, Irvine offers a refreshing presentation of Stoicism, showing how this ancient philosophy can still direct us toward a better life.

A good read on what modern stoicism can be.
Revisado: 11-10-22
A good read on what modern stoicism can (and probably is best considered to) be.
The book does justice to most stoic concepts, making sure the reader is presented both with the caveats and the explanations of those caveats, as to avoid creating some misguided critique of the actual philosophy.
The singular aspect that I would consider less than what I'd wish for from such a book, is the frequency of the term "misliving". I do not know of the actual stoic belief on those not practicing stoicism, or any other philosophy of life, but I'd stay away from using that term and even consider a life (any life) as being mislived. I'd say the author does offer a bit of explanation on this at the end of the book, where he explains that it's normal to be skeptical at times even about stoicism and its'efficiency or fitness for one's life, but over the course of the book there are claims that seem to tilt towards implying a risk of misliving if one does not adopt stoicism or some stoic concepts.

Simply packed with usefulness
Revisado: 02-17-22
Most of us want to progress into something, whatever it may be, it is sometimes hard to find the time/drive/etc to do the work we know is necessary for it. This book not only explains why that is so but is packed with useful resources, information that I can confirm pushed me (at least) to be more driven and more consistent into my personal development. Don't expect a "recipe" here but you will find an understanding of why some "recipes" might not work for you and how you can make your own, how you can control your drive and flow and seemingly turn "no time" into useful optimal time without it being a disruptive influence in your life.

Our brains do their best to help us out, but every so often they can be real assholes - having meltdowns, getting addicted to things, or shutting down completely at the worst possible moments. Your brain knows it's not good to do these things, but it can't help it sometimes - especially if it's obsessing about trauma it can't overcome. That's where this life-changing book comes in. With humor, patience, science, and lots of good-ole swearing, Dr. Faith explains what's going on in your skull, and talks you through the process of retraining your brain to respond appropriately....

Factfulness: The stress-reducing habit of carrying only opinions for which you have strong supporting facts. When asked simple questions about global trends - why the world's population is increasing; how many young women go to school; how many of us live in poverty - we systematically get the answers wrong. So wrong that a chimpanzee choosing answers at random will consistently outguess journalists, Nobel laureates, and investment bankers.

Refresh your views
Revisado: 05-12-21
Finally a refreshing perspective on the world.
It really shows (with numbers, events and sometimes experiences from the author) how malformed our impression of the world is.
This book might be a tough pill to swallow if your views can be summed up as "we are shittier than ever before and humanity is going towards damnation". The book is often constructing a perspective based on the 10 reasons it mentions, that, it describes as normal and natural human behaviors, which often end up conspiring to only create a very different view of the world than the reality.
On the other hand if you yourself consider progress (or define progress so to say) in such a way that you see the world evolving and bettering itself in the future, you have to know that this book will offer

An Angry book to help angry people
Revisado: 04-30-21
Honestly this was probably the best (and probably funniest) content i have ever went through that is intended to help with self-management of ones' emotions, it does not sugarcoat it, it does not pretend it is easy, and uses vulgarity to get under your skin and spread the message of the angry reasoning and how to better understand and cope with it.
Definitely a great read/listen for anyone that actually is confronting with the burning fire of anger too frequently.

A useful philosophy delivered right
Revisado: 04-28-21
Stoicism is just one of the very important sources one can draw from to create a modern-day productive philosophy that is not filled with existential dread and lack of drive.
The book does justice by explaining the topics tackled by the stoics in a very well-rounded way both with great commentary and explanations and lots of quotes from the forefront of stoicism and even some other philosophers that do share their ideals.
Anyone interested in the applied morals part of philosophy would only have to gain from this book.

Revisado: 04-14-21
This is an amazingly well structured read/listen and full of valuable information for the diet of anyone willing to put in the time to adjust their eating habits to their training.
This has to be mentioned, the book is aimed towards persons doing a form of exercise or fitness training, aiming to educate into how to adjust their meals to their own needs, it's not a premade diet or some ready-made plan thrown in your face. The book is actually a guide for how you, yourself, can build that plan for your own situation and needs.
