Historia
England, 1191. King Richard is half a world away, fighting for God and his own ambition. Back home, his country languishes, bankrupt and on the verge of anarchy. People with power are running unchecked. People without are growing angry. And in Nottingham, one of the largest shires in England, the sheriff seems intent on doing nothing about it. Good story line. Poorly executed.
Revisado: 07-25-21
Rambles with long extraneous and often redundant dialog. May have been good at one-third the length. The female narration was excruciating. Her portrayal of male voices made the male characters sound like a pre-adolescents imitating grown ups.

Historia
Brilliantly read by Nigel Gore, this audiobook joins together George Robert Minkoff’s three critically acclaimed historical novels about the founding of the first English colony at Jamestown - The Weight of Smoke, The Dragons of the Storm, and The Leaves of Fate. The novels are visionary epics chronicling lesser-known aspects of the Elizabethan world, including the importance of alchemy to Queen Elizabeth and her court. The canvas is vast, intertwining the life of John Smith, as a narrator, with that of Sir Francis Drake, the great Elizabethan explorer.

A dreary 57 hours
Revisado: 03-06-20
Certainly a monumental undertaking. But 57 hours of dreary monotone in an affected accent was a bit difficult to stay with. There is no real story. More or less an odd re-telling of well worn history. There is little of the historical novel here. The stuff of the novel that makes history sing is missing. It is confused by out of place philosophical arguments that have little to do with the story and are argued by simple folk in effete upperclass English.

Historia
Lydia Quixano Pérez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable. When Lydia’s husband’s tell-all profile of Javier, the jefe of the newest drug cartel that has gruesomely taken over the city, is published, none of their lives will ever be the same.

Very good. A non-fiction wrapped it a good novel
Revisado: 02-08-20
The characters may be fiction, but the story is real life. This is Mexico as transient immigrants-migrants see it and experience it. The incidences described of Cartel violence, robbery, rape and murder and the circumstances in which they occur are legitimized every day in the Mexican media. As I read this book I also read of the same crimes in words of a lesser style in a major Mexico City newspaper. No racism here. Simply a sympathetic view or the victims and their "all in" journey to what they see as a better life.

Not worth the listen
Revisado: 12-12-19
Nothing of interest in the plot. No depth to characters. No excitement. Not up to even the mediocre of U.S. Civil War fiction.
The narration is just plain awful. A droning monotone in a British accent. Not even close to the Southern/Georgia warmth it attempts to portray. Consequently the dialog is often British accented with consistent mis-pronunciation of familiar southern dialect.

Narrated like a High School book report.
Revisado: 10-18-19
No new angle to a story- line that has been written 100s of times before, most better than this.
The narration is awful. Spoken in a droning monotone. Names and places mis-pronounced. If there is a better story here. The narration has all the excitement of a High School book report. Tedious.

Not worthy of the series

I’ve either read and/or listened to the entire series. Five stars all. This is a real let down. If this is the final chapter, I’d give it only one star. If there is another to come, I hope that it is a redeeming effort.

Historia
The British have invaded Charlestown and the Revolutionary War has descended with a vengeance upon the sleepy southern frontier. Oppression, privation, and fear overwhelm the villages and homesteads of North and South Carolina. The Patriot cause seems all but lost. James and John Hamilton are violently drawn into the war by forces seemingly beyond their control. Since their early childhood these brothers have survived rejection, hunger, death, tragedy, and loss. But will they survive the bloody onslaught and depravity of the Redcoats and their Tory allies?

Story Hour
Revisado: 02-18-19
Narration doesn't fit the story. Literation is more suited to children's books and Story Hour at the public library. Liked the story, but couldn't finish because of the performance. Do listen to the sample before purchasing. I didn't. My fault.
