Historia
Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

An engrossing, highly accomplished story I recommend to all lovers of mystery. Often, authors do not make the best narrators of their own work....here is an impressive exception...a performance adding depth, tone and strength to the work. Do yourself a favor and get it now.

Historia
Bren Cameron, acting as the representative of the atevi's political leader, Tabini-aiji, as well as translator between humans and atevi, has undertaken a mission to the human enclave of Mospheira. Both his presence on the island and his absence from the continent have stirred old enemies to realize new opportunities. Old hatreds. Old grudges. Old ambitions. The situation has strengthened the determination of power-seekers on both sides of the strait. Bren knows most of them very well, but not all of them well enough.

Having worked in law for 40 years, I can say that this story resounds with authenticity. In addition, the writing is admirable. This work does not tell us, it shows us the current vast gap between our ideals and our practice, yet leaves us with hope for the future among persons of good will. Bravo!

A puzzle-box plot, an unbearably suspenseful story of a woman made immensely strong of purpose. A mother's love is stronger than evil. Highly recommended!

A delicious, long Escher's puzzle of a book! The narration adds power and resonance, and doesn't miss a beat. This is probably not for younger readers, however, unless they are exceptionally mature. It 's open texture leads one to fall deep and dream wide with this one. Adding it to my list to be read again!

London police detective Maeve Kerrigan has spent plenty of time at Murchison House. One of the many cement high-rise towers comprising the Maudling Estate housing project, Murchison House is home to a motley mix of society. From domestic abuse victims and elderly widows with nowhere else to turn to its flourishing criminal elements, Maeve is familiar with many of its occupants by name or reputation.

Half the pleasure in this audio book is the talent of the performance. The rest is in the characterizations and the complexity of the story. I can hardly wait to experience the rest of the series. Highly recommended. A strong female protagonist with sharp edges, deep shadows and a mature sense of self.
