The book does an amazing job of explaining rivers: the science behind their behavior; interesting histories of some of the major rivers of the world; humankind's interaction with them. I read this book because my husband is a fluvial geomorphologist and up until now, there is not a book that I know of that explains rivers to the layperson. The writing is excellent. There are memorable stories about The Nile, dam removal, dam building, hydropower, Steelhead trout. and more!

What did you love best about Recovery?

I like that Russell Brand walks us through how he worked the 12-step program. I refreshing modernization of the program. I like how he explains Higher Power, as this is a stumbling block for many of us.

What other book might you compare Recovery to and why?

There is no other book out there like this one.

What about Russell Brand’s performance did you like?

I read the book and then purchased the audio version. It is better when Russell Brand reads it--more meaningful hearing it straight from him. He is a great reader.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I loved the beginning. And I felt like the chapter on the 4th step was particularly helpful.

Any additional comments?

If you are struggling with any addiction, (people, alcohol, shopping, etc.) this is a lovely book that explains how to work the steps as prescribed by a 12-step program. It is his personal story about working the program, so in a way it is a memoir, but it is also a How-To-Do book as well.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Undoing Depression?

The story of his own realization about his depression.

What about Richard O'Connor’s performance did you like?

I loved how his voice reflected the compassion that he felt for people who suffer. I never detected any haughtiness, or superiority, just his desire to help people. The author reads his own book--it makes for a very truthful reading. This guy has suffered from his own depression and knows what it feels like.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

no.

Any additional comments?

This is one of the best books that I have read about depression and anxiety too. I respect the author's experience as a clinician, depressant, and researcher. An excellent book. Sometimes the sadness of the book got to me a bit and I noticed that I was pretty blue. Take a break from the book if you are prone to obsess about thoughts. I also liked his approach with antidepressants and therapy, exercise, healthy habits, etc. Very very sound advice.

If you could sum up Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life in three words, what would they be?

read again and again

What was one of the most memorable moments of Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life?

The story of the Head Nun who showed Karen compassion--What one small thing can do to bolster up another person.

What about Karen Armstrong’s performance did you like?

This is a very well-written book. I am reading it as part of a book club over the duration of a year. I have the print and the audible--Having the author read the text makes it really come alive in a way that the print does not.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

no.

Any additional comments?

This is a very excellent book--it is not for the casual reader. If you follow the instructions of the book, you will have your work cut out for you for a long time. I loved the way each step builds upon the next in a the way traditional 12-step programs do. Don't be turned off by the 12-step approach, as my husband was. Give yourself time to work through the steps--invite a friend or several to work through the book with you.
