Historia
The Earth teems with sights and textures, sounds and vibrations, smells and tastes, electric and magnetic fields. But every kind of animal, including humans, is enclosed within its own unique sensory bubble, perceiving but a tiny sliver of our immense world. In An Immense World, Ed Yong coaxes us beyond the confines of our own senses, allowing us to perceive the skeins of scent, waves of electromagnetism, and pulses of pressure that surround us.

Historia
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.

Amazing, Sobering, Frightening to the Core
Revisado: 03-27-24
As another reviewer also stated, I too grew up through the Cold War era and carried it for my lifetime. The effects of this book are quite nuclear on the audience. I wish everyone would read this. It puts us squarely at the most important crossroads of our existence. As important to our time as Rachel Carson’s SILENT SPRING was on our youth. Thank You Annie Jacobsen.

Historia
In 1976 a deadly virus emerged from the Congo forest. As swiftly as it came, it disappeared, leaving no trace. Over the four decades since, Ebola has emerged sporadically, each time to devastating effect. It can kill up to 90 percent of its victims. In between these outbreaks, it is untraceable, hiding deep in the jungle. The search is on to find Ebola's elusive host animal.

Fascinating and Educational

I will jump for anything by David Quammen. His work is always an adventure into his research. This one hits the mark by answering all the what, why, where questions on a topic fairly current that everyone still ponders about this scary virus. Also, good narration.

These all-new stories from all over the Rocky Mountains are sure to give you chills, yet also make you want to meet a Bigfoot - well, maybe theoretically, at least. Are you brave enough to listen to them at night by headlamp while camped in the deep forest? Or will you read them at home, after locking all the windows?

Cheesy voice imitations, even somewhat insulting and offensive. VERY distracting from the stories.
There were some re-starts of phrasing that should have been edited out.

Historia
The emergence of strange new diseases is a frightening problem that seems to be getting worse. In this age of speedy travel, it threatens a worldwide pandemic. We hear news reports of Ebola, SARS, AIDS, and something called Hendra killing horses and people in Australia - but those reports miss the big truth that such phenomena are part of a single pattern. The bugs that transmit these diseases share one thing: they originate in wild animals and pass to humans by a process called spillover. David Quammen tracks this subject around the world.

I listened to this book several times through before commenting. I like to understand things even if I am not a practitioner within a field. Considering our recent times with a pandemic, this book will make very clear the battle to fight and prevent devastating diseases and give vital historic background that has brought humanity to this point in time. If you are also a person who craves understanding, you will appreciate the author’s deep commitment to this topic. The author, David Quammen, is always worth the time to read.
