Historia
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn famously said that one of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming totalitarianism can't happen in their country. Many American Christians are making that mistake today, sleepwalking through the erosion of our freedoms. Live Not by Lies will wake them and equip them for the long resistance.

Prepping for the Emerging Soft Totalitarianism
Revisado: 11-29-20
What soft American Christians must learn from costly resistance to Communism by our East European brothers and sisters: Christ calls followers, not admirers. I fear this message is still too early for many American Christians to accept, but enough should to help all prepare.

Love Klavan’s Cultural Commentary But Could Not Enter This Story World
Revisado: 06-21-20
I Love Klavan’s Cultural Commentary But Could Not Enter This Story World.
I may be a nonfiction-only, narrowly pleased reader. I simply could not suspend disbelief enough to take seriously shuttling between the two worlds that constitute the scenes for all action.

Meeting Christ thru Strongest of Rational Tests
Revisado: 04-27-18
Nabeel’s testimony enthralls with his tender and tenacious love of family, childhood faith, the search for truth, and God. A model for honest searchers and a primer on little-known facts about the historical development of the Qur’an, on testing the historical veracity of the Christian Testament, and on the piercing cost of following Christ. Superb in every way.

Historia
Ken Stern watched the increasing polarization of our country with growing concern. As a longtime partisan Democrat himself, he felt forced to acknowledge that his own views were too parochial, too absent of any exposure to the "other side". In fact, his urban neighborhood is so liberal, he couldn't find a single Republican - even by asking around. So, for one year, he crossed the aisle to spend time listening, talking, and praying with Republicans of all stripes.

Maybe Republican, But Not Like Me
Revisado: 04-11-18
Marvelous titling hooked me. I appreciate any Hobart Street liberal who would exert Stern’s effort to understand his socio-Politico-spiritual others. That is an act of love. But finally the title misleads: Stern nowhere self-identifies as a Republican and seems to own “the muddy middle” as his political home. I learned from listening and am most grateful to experience him as an Other with whom I can find a lot of common affections, desires, and fears. But he is hardly Republican like me or like most conservatives I know. Brilliant marketing, nonetheless.

Historia
Honoring the wish of her late grandmother, Maura Donovan visits the small Irish village where her Gran was born-though she never expected to get bogged down in a murder mystery. Nor had she planned to take a job in one of the local pubs, but she finds herself excited to get to know the people who knew her Gran. In the pub, she's swamped with drink orders as everyone in town gathers to talk about the recent discovery of a nearly 100-year-old body in a nearby bog.

Tiresome narration for a decent story.
Revisado: 05-10-16
Interesting plot, but the breathy, flat tone and mock Boston accent became tiresome. The ending was a little anti-climatic.

Historia
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Kept my interest.
Revisado: 09-14-15
Would you listen to All the Light We Cannot See again? Why?
Yes--I'm a re-reader of books I enjoyed, and this book kept my interest.
What was one of the most memorable moments of All the Light We Cannot See?
When Marie failed at finding her way home, time and again, and then it happened--almost as a surprise. I liked her self-discovery. Also, I liked the puzzles her father gave her for her birthdays.
Which character – as performed by Zach Appelman – was your favorite?
The sister of the main male character--I liked her convictions.
Who was the most memorable character of All the Light We Cannot See and why?
The uncle--Entienne (not sure of spelling)--how he overcame his fears for the sake of family.
Any additional comments?
I was surprised how much I liked this book. It started out sort of slow, and I didn't care for the French of the reader--he was better at the German, but once I got into it, I couldn't stop listening. Kept me going for a 400 mile roadtrip.

A little bit too much...
Revisado: 09-14-15
Would you try another book from the authors and/or Priscilla Shirer?
Possibly--
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I just think it sounded like she was trying too hard. I felt exhausted after a couple of chapters.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
A bit too much emphasis.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
No
Any additional comments?
I like her in her Bible Studies--I'm sorry I didn't really care for what I heard of this book.

Revisado: 02-18-15
Here is the story of the world's brightest hope for 'ordered liberty' today. It is the heart-stirring story of leaders being accountable to their people, of common law that respects beneficial tradition, in its concrete splendor, over the abstractions of elites grasping autocracy, of civility favoring the flourishing of commerce from the hamlets to the Hamptons

Historia
With this updated edition of his earlier book, A Place of My Own, listeners can revisit the inspired, intelligent, and often hilarious story of Pollan’s realization of a room of his own—a small, wooden hut, his “shelter for daydreams” — built with his admittedly unhandy hands. Inspired by both Thoreau and Mr. Blandings, A Place of My Own not only works to convey the history and meaning of all human building, it also marks the connections between our bodies, our minds, and the natural world.

Read to enjoy literary qualities, not to learn
Revisado: 12-17-14
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
The author writes very well, but the (audio) book reminded me of the old saw: I asked what time it was, and he gave me the history of watchmaking. I did not expect Popular Mechanics but I wanted to know more about how his place was built than about the various literary and architectural traditions that informed him while building or after and while writing or perhaps both.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
He held my attention most when narrating the generally civil conflict between architect and builder: there was the story for me, and that was both pleasurable and informative.
