Why do we assume romantic relationships are more important than friendships? What do we lose when we expect a spouse to meet all our needs? And what can we learn about commitment, love, and family from people who put deep friendship at the center of their lives? In The Other Significant Others, NPR's Rhaina Cohen invites us into the lives of people who have defied convention by choosing a friend as a life partner—these are friends who are home co-owners, co-parents or each other’s caregivers.

annoying how gayness and intense platonic relationships were not further juxtaposed
Revisado: 11-30-24
The message is wonderful and I do love sexuality and friendship discussions. What annoyed me is that the author refused to see intense platonic relationships as a little gay. She would constantly affirm that gayness necessarily involves sexual attraction, and failed to realize intense platonic relationships can be seen as gay by the people in them too. The difference is that she wouldn't know about it because most people don't go announcing they don't have sex with their partners. It seemed a little ridiculous when she mentioned a celibate gay man living with his best friend as something not gay just because he says so, when they called each other by their pet names. It was obvious the relationship was not completely straight, and Art repeatedly said it was a good "substitute" for a romantic connection. The lack of criticism towards religion and its connection to homophobia was off-putting. And even when the author mentioned a gay asexual person in one of these intense relationships, she failed to connect the dots by insisting it was completely platonic.
The book sounded like the author's had/has a hard time accepting her own sexuality and reassuring herself that having feelings towards her friends is not cheating because it is 100% platonic, when it might not be. Considering her own exploration on the topic happened AFTER her heterosexual marriage, it reaffirms that perception further, since the author had no time to dig into her own feelings towards women and try a romance out without the restraints of monogamy.
Again, the subject is important and interesting. But one has to wonder if the book would be different is the author was single. Maybe she would have an open mind towards things being both romantic and platonic simultaneously, instead of always platonic but very "intense". Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

Historia
In Unmasking Autism, Dr. Devon Price shares their personal experience with masking and blends history, social science research, prescriptions, and personal profiles to tell a story of neurodivergence that has thus far been dominated by those on the outside looking in. For Dr. Price and many others, Autism is a deep source of uniqueness and beauty. Unfortunately, living in a neurotypical world means it can also be a source of incredible alienation and pain.

life changing, not kidding
Revisado: 05-22-22
for years I thought that what i had to do to heal was doing whatever i wanted, which sounded too selfish for me but I tried anyway. my life ended up being good, i gained self steem and confidence. but my personal life was crumbling. obviously, doing what I wanted wasn't gonna cut it, although it helped a lot with the first steps.
after I read this book, I started understanding what I did wrong and what I did right. and now that I started putting everything together, I finally found the perfect way to live. expressing my feelings, always.

Historia
In Marriage, a History, historian and marriage expert Stephanie Coontz takes listeners from the marital intrigues of ancient Babylon to the torments of Victorian lovers to demonstrate how recent the idea of marrying for love is - and how absurd it would have seemed to most of our ancestors. It was when marriage moved into the emotional sphere in the 19th century, she argues, that it suffered as an institution just as it began to thrive as a personal relationship.

absolutely shocking
Revisado: 04-05-22
I was expecting the book to be a compilation of facts on marriage, what I wasn't expecting was a concise narrative, and a page turner at that
I thought that the book coming out in 2005 would be mostly close minded and even a little conservative. that was not the case. although there were some hints of resistance to gay marriage/polyamory/trans people or gender non conforming people, it was never openly against those things either. the author seemed to have a really liberal idea over the institution in general, while also keeping some unique opinions and interesting takes. refreshing af
that being said, the content and the history was more interesting than any of that. now I definitely have a broader idea on this institution and some assumptions/ideas to change about it
eye opening book, 10/10

Our narrator should be happy, shouldn't she? She's young, thin, pretty, a recent Columbia graduate; she works an easy job at a hip art gallery and lives in an apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan paid for, like the rest of her needs, by her inheritance. But there is a dark and vacuous hole in her heart, and it isn't just the loss of her parents, or the way her Wall Street boyfriend treats her, or her sadomasochistic relationship with her best friend, Reva. It's the year 2000 in a city aglitter with wealth and possibility; what could be so terribly wrong?

Revisado: 09-16-21
i found out about this book through a booktuber that gave it 3 stars, then, i saw it at a library and decided to buy another book. now, i took notice of an extra credit on audible that i didn't know what to spend on, and chose this book. needless to say that i didn't expect much, but i was glad to be wrong.
it's so good! how can this protagonist entertain me for so long with basically nothing going on? her past, her descriptions and her clear lack of attachment, it wasn't a part of the story, it MADE the story. also, wow, she's definitely not a good person and she is racist and weird and passive but, still, i perfectly understand her. what an iconic character, and with this depth that i thought only real people could have. this book really opened my eyes to the possibilities of writing subjectivity. amazing book.

Revisado: 09-15-21
this book was really surprising. i expected it to go surfice level and explore only the pressure to not be lazy at work, but i was delighted to notice that the author decided to explore the capitalist and protestant roots of the concept of laziness and how it permeates into every single bit of our lives. a must read! specially if you are an overarching person who believes that exhaustion is virtue. great book!

In Faking It, Lux Alptraum tackles the topic of seemingly dishonest women; investigating whether women actually lie, and what social situations might encourage deceptions both great and small. Using her experience as a sex educator and former CEO of Fleshbot (the foremost blog on sexuality), first-hand interviews with sexuality experts and everyday women, Alptraum raises important questions: Are lying women all that common - or is the idea of the dishonest woman a symptom of male paranoia? Are women trying to please men, or just avoid their anger?

white hetero american liberal feminism
Revisado: 09-10-21
I've learned a lot with it, don't get me wrong. The beginning of the book felt fresh and interesting, but after chapter 4 or so, it was boring. It felt like tumblr 101 feminism, like half baked thoughts. A nice compilation at that, but still superficial.

katie's voice. that's it, that's the review
Revisado: 09-08-21
bought this to listen to katie mcgrath's voice and had to read it twice to actually pay attention to the story. and I was not displeased with it! the changing of scenarios felt a bit confusing, but, in general, the book is more of a contemplation of different lives and people than a story with a beginning, middle and ending per se. I loved the characters and their unstable and dramatic natures, I loved the descriptions and the courage that the author had to go deep into any topic. it was great experience reading it.

What exactly is sexual attraction and what is it like to go through life not experiencing it? What does asexuality reveal about gender roles, about romance and consent, and the pressures of society? This accessible examination of asexuality shows that the issues that aces face - confusion around sexual activity, the intersection of sexuality and identity, navigating different needs in relationships - are the same conflicts that nearly all of us will experience.

one of the most eye opening books ive ever read
Revisado: 08-17-21
i expected this book to be either too basic or too complex, but i found myself absolutely loving how angela chen describes with clarity foreign concepts that ive never been introduced to in my life. this book is truly a manifesto of asexuality and one of the most eye opening books ive ever read. the pace is perfect for an audiobook and the experience of reading it surprisingly enjoyable for non fiction. my favorite topics discussed were consent, amatonormativity, and the percieved but not truly different nature of romance vs platonic closeness. because of this book, my views on friendship and romance are forever changed, and im glad they are. 10/10 experience, would absolutely recommend.

You mean to tell me that this book is 100% fictional? Absolutely not! To me, she is as real as myself.
Now, real talk, this book was amazing to listen. It was a full experience, it felt like Evelyn herself was reading it to me: her life so full of games with nothing feeling unimportant.
