Historia
Like much of North Korea, Songmi Han lived in desperate poverty. As a child, she and her family endured extreme hardship, with many meals consisting of little more than grass. Domestic abuse, grueling physical labor, emotional abuse, and hunger were constant in her life. School was out of the question, and she and her mother stole food to survive. Greenlight to Freedom: A North Korean Daughter’s Search for Her Mother and Herself, written by Songmi Han and Casey Lartigue Jr., recounts Songmi’s childhood and escape from North Korea in a perilous and gripping narrative.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Murasaki Shikibu, born into the middle ranks of the aristocracy during the Heian period (794-1185 CE), wrote The Tale of Genji, widely considered the world's first novel, during the early years of the 11th century. Expansive, compelling, and sophisticated in its representation of ethical concerns and aesthetic ideals, Murasaki's tale came to occupy a central place in Japan's remarkable history of artistic achievement and is now recognized as a masterpiece of world literature.

THE WORLDS FIRST NOVEL
Revisado: 09-09-24
The Tale of Genji, was written by a woman, and is still being read today, one-thousand years later. It's so interesting how widely acknowledged it was during the strong patriarchy of the world back then, and even so now. It focuses on the life of Genji. Complex and full of poetry, one of the main things written about is his romantic life, and how the royalties lived 1000 years ago. This is a book that everyone serious about literature should read. It's historical. The only down side to this book, is that its is a major work of art, and therefore, extremely, extremely long. After listening to this part, which is about thirty eight or thirty nine hours of listening, can't remember the exact amount, you go on to volume two. Again, it is extremely long. As a woman, I am proud to say it was my gender for the role of the world's first novel. If you research the book, you will find hours and hours of study. It is NOT an easy read. The only thing that upsets me, is we live in a worldly patriarchy where the book wasn't mentioned once in college. I only found out about it because I am deeply interested in Japan. THIS BOOK should be mentioned in schools as much as Beowulf. Regardless, I enjoyed it. It was strange in many parts, but you can always research it. IMO a beautiful, historical work of art everyone into literature should try to read. There was one thing I didn't like, however, the narrator was to fast reading this book. It's a hard book to read, slowing it down would have made it a lot more enjoyable.

Historia
Eunsun Kim was born in North Korea, one of the most secretive and oppressive countries in the modern world. As a child, Eunsun loved her country...despite her school field trips to public executions, daily self-criticism sessions, and the increasing gnaw of hunger as the countrywide famine escalated. By the time she was 11 years old, Eunsun's father and grandparents had died of starvation, and Eunsun too was in danger of starving. Finally her mother decided to escape North Korea with Eunsun and her sister.

Escaping North Korea
Revisado: 09-04-24
I loved this book. Korea itself, along with the DPRK, has fascinated me for years, and I try to collect as many defector books as possible. I could not believe this great story was free on audible! All other defector stories I have read from here, cost credits or money. Every defector has a different story. This one was heartbreaking at times, but alas, the author successfully defected. If you're interested in North Korea, and want to see how things operate there, download this book. Start collecting other defector's books.I must say I have read some I was not too fond of, but this one gets 5 stars from me

extremely calming
Revisado: 08-04-24
I put this on, and felt so relaxed. There is no way you can learn any real, conversational Japanese with this. However, I'm using this every night to go to bed, and if you can't sleep, I recommend this. It is very, very calming. I already knew most of the vocabulary, picked up some new stuff here and there, but again, extremely helpful for insomnia. So if you can't sleep, and want to learn some Japanese words, get this! I listen to it till I wake up and it's off, then go back to the beginning and fall right back to bed. Great little tool.

Historia
Korea was one of the last countries in Asia to be visited by Westerners, and its borders have remained largely unchanged since it was unified in the seventh century. Though it is one of the world's oldest and most ethnically homogeneous states, Korea was not born in a vacuum. Geographically isolated, the country was heavily influenced by powerful China and was often used as a bridge to the mainland by Japan. Calling themselves as "a shrimp among whales", Koreans borrowed elements of government, culture, and religion, all the while fiercely fighting to maintain independence.

a great brief history of Korea
Revisado: 07-21-24
I enjoyed this book very much. I would almost say it was excellent, aside from the narrator's mispronouncing of Korean words. If your narrating a book, learn how to say the words. This is coming from a white American, lol. However, aside from the terrible pronunciation of Korean words, id give it 5 stars. however, if I was Korean, I might have found that more offensive, im not sure. Second languages are hard, but he had only a few words to practice before this. However, I thought this book was very accurate and would recommend it for a read. I would just correct his pronunciation before they read.

Historia
North Korea is one of the most troubled societies on earth. The country's 24 million people live under a violent dictatorship led by a single family, which relentlessly pursues the development of nuclear arms, which periodically incites risky military clashes with the larger, richer, liberal South, and which forces each and every person to play a role in the "theater state" even as it pays little more than lip service to the wellbeing of the overwhelming majority.

not a defector story, very great knowledge
Revisado: 06-05-24
pretty much all my books, except two,are defector stories. the others, which are a study, are a very rare books of complete stories about Kim Jung ill. it was 💯 propaganda and not able to get anymore. this was a book permitted when Obama was ok with NK propaganda coming here, however THIS BOOK is not a defector story. this is a huge educational study of the country and very a big look at actual statistics. 5/5!!!!

Historia
North Korea is isolated and hungry, bankrupt and belligerent. It is also armed with nuclear weapons. Between 150,000 and 200,000 people are being held in its political prison camps, which have existed twice as long as Stalin's Soviet gulags and twelve times as long as the Nazi concentration camps. Very few born and raised in these camps have escaped. But Shin Donghyuk did. In Escape from Camp 14, acclaimed journalist Blaine Harden tells the story of Shin Dong-hyuk and through the lens of Shin's life unlocks the secrets of the world's most repressive totalitarian state.

great defector story! 5/5!!
Revisado: 06-01-24
I loved this story, you really get the meat of the country. I cried during this audible, and couldn't believe it could have possibly the best defector story I ever heard. if you studied Korea like me, like me, wfor many many years and never came across . I find the defectors stories are the closest thing to best to get to know Korea. studying the actual country (those books are good too) . the only one I couldn't ever read that one was so awful i couldnt go to the end. he was talking about Kim Jung Un and pronounced the name wrong over and over. it's called "North Korea undercover" was so so hard. terrible story, total horrible, DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME. Although there are mistakes about history, I just, a couple weeks ago, read "Nothing to Envy" which was a great read. it was a study into the defector lives, all while her study stayed up on laws, ECT. it's the best study book. most of my books in the early 2000s got burned. so I love I can listen to a lot here. if you like defector stories the most, like me, read "the girl with 7 names" or "in order to live" which is here on audible .. by Yeonmi Park

Historia
North Korea is like no other tyranny on Earth. Its citizens are told their home is the greatest nation in the world, and Big Brother is always watching. It is Orwell's 1984 made reality. Huge factories with no staff or electricity, hospitals with no patients, uniformed child soldiers, and the world-famous and eerily empty DMZ - the Demilitarized Zone, where North Korea ends and South Korea begins - are all framed by a relentless flow of regime propaganda from omnipresent loudspeakers. Free speech is an illusion: one word out of line, and the gulag awaits.

this person's book is talking so much about the new leader ..BUT HE MISPRONOUNCED HIS NAME! don't waste your credits or money!!!
Revisado: 05-30-24
I've been self-studying North Korea for over 12 years. so im blind to this man's IGNORANCE. I find DPRK aka North Korea interesting. if your just starting books .. the ones about defector stories were my first research into knowing about the most secretive state in the world. some books of study, they made tiny, little mistakes, but the book was so true good it made it's justice because the wasn't full of lies.. by chapter 2, this book/man, didn't even get his name right, and it was ignorant and mostly fiction. I could see through his lies. IF YOUR IN COLLEGE, I SUGGEST A GOOD DEFECTOR STORY. THOSE ARE GREAT, EXCEPT ONE BUT ONLY TRUE CAUSE I THOUGHT IT HAD A RUSHED CONCLUSION. TYPE IN HOW TO PRONOUNCE KIM JUNG UN. YOU'LL SEE RIGHT THROUGH THE EYES OF PROBABLY JUST GOING ON VACATION. CAUSE THAT'S WHAT IT SOUNDED RIGHT.

Half-Korean, half-Japanese, Masaji Ishikawa has spent his whole life feeling like a man without a country. This feeling only deepened when his family moved from Japan to North Korea when Ishikawa was just thirteen years old, and unwittingly became members of the lowest social caste. His father, himself a Korean national, was lured to the new Communist country by promises of abundant work, education for his children, and a higher station in society. But the reality of their new life was far from utopian.

Revisado: 05-18-24
I have read, and listened, to many books by North Korean defectors. It was a nice change to listen to a Japanese defectors story. All other stories I have heard were from native North Koreans. However, I somehow felt this book wasn't complete. At the end, it lead you guessing to many subjects the author had brought up.
