Historia
William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all.

I loved the portrayal of women in Vietnam. I knew nothing about what they went through. I appreciated the showcasing of women’s friendships that were about so much more than kids, fashion, etc. I really enjoyed this book.

Revisado: 09-25-24
The resilience of the female characters was so inspirational. The story was unique and kept me itching to get back to it. I fell in love with the women and children of this book. I usually shy away from stories about WWII because it is so depressing, but this touched on just enough to make the story interesting, but not break my heart. I highly recommend this book.

Huge pity party for the author
Revisado: 09-10-24
I listened almost to the end, and then I couldn't take it anymore. I kept waiting for the sun to come out, but the author seems to want to complain, complain, complain and we are all to take it in. So let's put aside that she and her family were saved by certain death from the U.S. Military. Then they got her to Michigan, where loving American Christians provided she and her family with a home and food and clothes for a year. Then she got a college education and has excelled as an author. Oh, but they pronounced her name, Bich, as Beesh or Bitch, instead of Bic, like the lighter. She was SOOO very damaged by this! And then her boyfriend's family paid for her train ticket to Chicago, where they put her up in a first-class hotel, took her to a five-star restaurant for dinner and then to the play Ms. Saigon. She could not stop crying because the Asian female in the play is a sex worker. Well, uh, wait a second. Hasn't there been all sorts of white women, from all nations, portrayed as sex workers; black, brown women portrayed in film and theater as sex workers? The author is having one big crying session for herself. She centers around the null relationship with her mother, which I am surprised she hasn't blamed on Americans and labeled as racist. But this story is really about "poor, poor me," instead of what it should be, thank you to America for this wonderful life I have, which could have been taken from me at one year old. Shame on you, ma'am. Please be thankful for the many, many, many gifts you have been given. And please don't listen to this.

Historia
For the past two decades, Rocky has looked forward to her family’s yearly escape to Cape Cod. Their humble beach-town rental has been the site of sweet memories, sunny days, great meals, and messes of all kinds. This year’s vacation, with Rocky sandwiched between her half-grown kids and fully aging parents, promises to be just as delightful as summers past—except, perhaps, for Rocky’s hormonal bouts of rage and melancholy. Her body is changing—her life is, too. And then a chain of events sends Rocky into the past, reliving both the tenderness and sorrow of a handful of long-ago summers.

Then one cool October morning in 1946, he rose early, drove into town, walked into the church, and calmly shot and killed the Reverend Dexter Bell.

Revisado: 05-08-24
I love the reader. He is my favorite. But of all the Grisham books I have listened to, this may be my least favorite. There are sad and graphic accounts of WWII and the fight in the Philippines. Riveting story but not for you if you are an empath. In the end, Grisham is so incredibly talented, and any Mississippian will enjoy the familiar characters.

Historia
The Fall of the House of Zeus tells the story of Dickie Scruggs, arguably the most successful plaintiff's lawyer in America. A brother-in-law of Trent Lott, the former U.S. Senate majority leader, Scruggs made a fortune taking on mass tort lawsuits against "Big Tobacco" and the asbestos industries. He was hailed by Newsweek as a latter-day Robin Hood and portrayed in the movie The Insider as a dapper aviator-lawyer.

Great story
Revisado: 06-19-23
My office was 3 doors down from Mr. Scruggs in Pascagoula. One of the kindest people I have ever met in my life. The story was riveting, how politics affect so many things we would never expect. I wish I could say I have led a perfect life. All of us have stumbled at one time or another. The good this gentleman has done far outweighs the bad, and in my heart, he is forgiven. I am proud to have known him. I wish Mr. Scruggs all the happiness in the world.

Historia
For most of the last hundred years, Biloxi was known for its beaches, resorts, and seafood industry. But it had a darker side. It was also notorious for corruption and vice, everything from gambling, prostitution, bootleg liquor, and drugs to contract killings. The vice was controlled by small cabal of mobsters, many of them rumored to be members of the Dixie Mafia.

Revisado: 02-14-21
I love this writer, and this story is about her family. Very sad, but told so well by her. She wanted us to know her family and I feel like I do. As with American Dirt, she opened my eyes to an issue I had not thought much about, victims of crime.
