This was a fantastically interesting book and the woman who narrated did a fine job. However, this is the story of a Scottish woman’s experiences and should not have been narrated by an American woman. All the little linguistic quirks and expressions sounded SO weird!

Great story, terrible narration

The moral of the story is, don’t narrate your own book. Peter Golenbock is an amazing writer but I almost had to turn this off. He mispronounces names (Mientkiewicz being the worst—it’s Ment-KAY-vitch, not mee-ENT-kuh-wix, as every Red Sox fan knows). He doesn’t stop for periods or commas, but he sure stops when he has to turn a page, even if the pause makes zero sense to someone listening. And yes, this is nitpicky, but no one is a “Red Sock” fan or a “Red Sock” player. It’s RED SOX. I highly recommend getting this book in hard copy. Great writing. Just don’t try to listen to it.

Maybe I'd have liked the story better in regular book form. This has to be the worst narrator I have ever heard. The story was a takeoff on Romeo and Juliet and just felt very forced most of the time.

As always, David McCullough brings history to life. The story was fantastic and vivid, and Nelson Runger really grew on me. At first I wasn't overly keen on him, but by the end I was listening to the book in little pieces because I didn't want to come to the end of his reading. The perfect voice for this story. He even did some of the historical voices--and somehow it really worked, without sounding overdone or silly. I highly recommend this book!

Thandie Newton is terrific; too bad Jane Eyre is excruciating

The only reason I made it to the end of this preposterous book is because Thandie Newton was reading it. The story is ridiculous. But Ms. Newton has a beautiful voice, a fantastic talent for doing different accents and voices for different characters, and I wish she'd do more audio books.
