Historia
Beware! The sordid lives of plants behaving badly. A tree that sheds poison daggers; a glistening red seed that stops the heart; a shrub that causes paralysis; a vine that strangles; and a leaf that triggered a war. Amy Stewart, best-selling author of Flower Confidential, takes on over two hundred of Mother Nature's most appalling creations in an A to Z of plants that kill, maim, intoxicate, and otherwise offend.

Poor Information
Revisado: 09-25-17
While interesting at first, I found her segment on khat highly exaggerated. Not only pronouncing it wrong, her chapter regarding this was clearly based off internet scare stories. Having tried khat many many times on my visits to Ethiopia- I can assure you it's noting more extreme than a cup of strong coffee paired with a cigarette. To suggest khat was even partly to blame for the death of US Soldiers in Mogadishu is highly laughable. Its consumed in Ethiopia and they have a quite peaceful society. It's only illegal because of wacko theories like this - all exaggerated the equivalent of the film Reefer Madness.
The book moves along quickly sometimes to quickly. There is an occasional example of how the particular plant has harmed someone but not enough in my preference.
Overall interesting but the khat chapter told me that some of this might be a bit exaggerated.

Historia
Drawing on previously unpublished eyewitness accounts, prizewinning historian Donald L. Miller has written what critics are calling one of the most powerful accounts of warfare ever published. Here are the horror and heroism of World War II in the words of the men who fought it, the journalists who covered it, and the civilians who were caught in its fury. Miller gives us an up-close, deeply personal view of a war that was more savagely fought - and whose outcome was in greater doubt - than one might imagine. This is the war that Americans on the home front would have read about had they had access to previously censored testimony.

Historia
On a brisk autumn day, a 13-year-old boy stands on the shores of the gray Atlantic, near a silent amusement park and a fading ocean resort called the Alhambra. The past has driven Jack Sawyer here: His father is gone, his mother is dying, and the world no longer makes sense. But for Jack everything is about to change. For he has been chosen to make a journey back across America - and into another realm. One of the most influential and heralded works of fantasy ever written, The Talisman is an extraordinary novel of loyalty, awakening, terror, and mystery.

Filler
Revisado: 12-21-16
I have always been a big fan of Stephen King. There are few of his books that I do not enjoy. And while this one started off beautifully, I found it was about 10 hours too long. It's full of clutter -which you don't realize until about 3/4 of the way through. I felt myself drifting off consistently during the last quarter. The story makes sense and has some cool moments and then it gets into the territory of utter nonsense. It seems as if each author was trying to outdo each other with craziness and the editor was afraid to remove anything. The last quarter had the resemblance of my 10-year-old nephew telling me one of his dreams or story ideas. It was just too ridiculous.

Excessive Rambling
Revisado: 11-18-16
Takes excessive time for what can be summed up within 10 minutes. Rambled on with few points made.
I was not much for the narrator, which also contributed to my dislike of the book. However, that is just my personal preference and you may enjoy the narration.

Previous books have promised to describe the combat experience of the World War II GI, but there has never been a book like Patrick O'Donnell's Beyond Valor. Here is the first combat history of the war in Europe in the words of the men themselves, and perhaps the most honest and brutal account of combat possible.

Necessary
Revisado: 11-10-16
All people of this world should be educated in World War 2 and the realities of battle. This is a fantastic book and I will even say, required reading for anyone who wishes to learn the realities of armed conflict. This is raw, real and emotionally driven. A fantastic and well done book. It started off slow but within an hour it was action packed. Excellent narrator.

In The Candy Machine, Tom Feiling travels the trade routes from Colombia via Miami, Kingston and Tijuana to London and New York. He meets Medellín hitmen, US kingpins, Brazilian traffickers and talks to soldiers and narcotics officers who fight the gangs and cartels. He traces cocaine's progress from legal ‘pick-me-up' to luxury product to global commodity, looks at legalization programmes in countries like Switzerland, and shows how America's anti-drugs crusade is actually increasing demand.

Now I want some cocaine.....
Revisado: 07-08-16
The author -clearly against the drug war -and I assume most readers like myself are against the drug war- takes it a step further and goes to great lengths to detail that Coke is not bad, rarely addictive and actually can be beneficial. While the first part of the book is informative and well researched, The last couple hours seem more like a paid advertisement for the positives of cocaine use. Through numerous examples and statistics The author summarizes how cocaine is rarely addictive and one can casually use when in need of a good time. It seems like someone is trying to justify their own cocaine use.

Wrote well and voiced well
Revisado: 07-01-16
First off, I love the narrators voice. He sounds a bit like Anthony Bourdain, which to me is a pleasant voice to hear for 8 hours.
The story itself is well wrote. Most hardcore Metallica fans won't learn to much, but it does go far more into detail than a TV documentary would. The only downside is the authors likes and dislikes are apparent and that includes with other bands. But a good enough story, well wrote and brutally honest at times (it's not all Metallica ass-kissing!). I won't be purchasing the second one when it debuts. For the simple fact that this book only confirmed my opinion of Metallica I've had for years- I'm a fan of the first 4 albums and after that- they've only disappointed.

My newfound appreciation for Mr. Harris.
Revisado: 03-23-16
"Dan Harris? Isn't he that news guy? Yeah who cares. Not me."
That was my conversation I had mentally when viewing the details of this book. Though I did cave in and purchase it - only because it was on sale for a very good price. And it managed to sit in the inbox for many weeks. But out of boredom, I gave it a chance.....and ended up finishing it the next afternoon.
Dan has a pleasant speaking voice. His writing is fantastic, humorous and he tells a good story. Then there is the self help (I would prefer to call it "good advice" instead) part. And after reading to many new age books and to many drawn out hypocritical self improvement books- I found great comfort in his findings. Nothing groundbreaking. Just the basics. But he tells his tale and tells it well. A good listen and lots of fun. Hope he does another book. He is a fantastic writer.

Historia
It is now 100 years since drugs were first banned in the United States. On the eve of this centenary, journalist Johann Hari set off on an epic three-year, 30,000-mile journey into the war on drugs. What he found is that more and more people all over the world have begun to recognize three startling truths: Drugs are not what we think they are. Addiction is not what we think it is. And the drug war has very different motives to the ones we have seen on our TV screens for so long.

One Sided
Revisado: 03-07-16
Well wrote and well composed. The stories presented within were great. However, the material is painfully one sided- and I am a firm believer that one should present the entire scope of viewpoints and experiences. Instead the story quickly focused on the support of total legalization (as do I but there were many missed viewpoints and experiences). I recommend American Pain and Dream Land for more insight. The narrator was excellent.
