Historia
In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He then investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the “play-based childhood” began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the “phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s.

Be the Good You Wish to See
Revisado: 11-30-24
Haidt's book is eye-opening and well-researched. Since I didn't grow up with smart phones, I wasn't fully aware of their addictive power over adolescents. This book did bring to mind other things I was addicted to in my teens, and how suseptible I was to marketing at that time. Currently, I have toddlers, so who knows what social media will be like when they are in their teens, but I am now more aware of the behaviors I need to model for my kids. I need to show them that they are more valuable than my own phone and prioritize them over it. As an early Millienial (born 1985), this book caused me to reflect on my own childhood and the freedoms I was allowed at young ages. Sadly, shows like Law & Order: SVU, Criminal Minds, CSI, etc. give us the impression that crime is everywhere and our children are extremely vulnerable. This safety-ism can cause parents to fear harm from all others and as such our children to grow up in constant fear. Don't get me wrong, I loved SVU, but it did start to wear on me that danger was everywhere. I want my kids to have adventures and trust them to be self-reliant. I walked home from elementary school, at little over a mile, including crossing a busy street. I biked around my neighborhood, I walked the dog, and took the T with friends. I did all this without smartphones or even cellphones. I don't want my kids to grow up in fear of the world, I want them to explore the world. Bring back free-range childhood.

Historia
Journalist and self-proclaimed “crappy gardener” Tamar Haspel is on a mission: to show us that raising or gathering our own food is not as hard as it’s often made out to be. When she and her husband move from Manhattan to two acres on Cape Cod, they decide to adopt a more active approach to their diet: raising chickens, growing tomatoes, even foraging for mushrooms and hunting their own meat. They have more ambition than practical know-how, but that’s not about to stop them from trying…even if sometimes their reach exceeds their (often muddy) grasp.

Thinking about starting a garden?
Revisado: 02-23-24
I enjoyed Tamar's initial venture into vegetable gardening. I loved container gardening when I lived in an apartment, only problem was the southern sun exposure of our apartment. It helped plants to grow, but also dried them out considerably. Since we bought a home with a backyard, I've wanted to garden again. My husband suggested this book to get a full idea of all that goes into trying to live off the land. I have no intention of starting a farm, but I was inspired by Tamar and her husband's fortitude in starting something and completing it. That's my failing, I get a "bee in my bonnet" with an idea, but I lose interest if it doesn't turn out how I expected. This is an excellent guide to all that goes into gardening, poultry raising, c
hunting and cooking from an amateur perspective. I enjoyed the book, but I'll need to think twice about starting my own projects.
